Why spend £250 with MB when you only need spend £58 with one from Bosch.

On the bosch one you use your own plastic casing.

I tried looking but can't see how to take it out, it looks like it is all sealed, no srews etc to remove the sensor

Remove the electrical plug and there should be two star or torx screws underneath.
Beware, if your torx bits don't seem to fit, some sensors are held in place with FIVE pointed star bits. Designated TS instead of the usual 6 pointed T.

And these may be the safety/security torx heads which means the center is hollowed out. That was the case with my MB's MAF.

A fair few MAFS are interchangeable

I changed the MAF on my 1999 E300TD. The cost of one for my model was going to be over £200 as it also came with the ducting housing. The Merc parts man indicated its the same as the CDI E Class version, with this model of car supplying just the MAF without the ducting/housing, and all for £68!

The moral of the story is - try to extract just the MAF sensor and check with your dealer what they have in the way of MAFs for other models, or buy one of the Bosch, or othe supplier's equivalents. I've also heard of VW interchanging with another supplier, so also worth checking other manufacturers, although I appreciate this will take a bit of homework.

PS - It wasn't the MAF on my car, so sold it on Ebay for £38, at least I got somehting back.
