I have just successfully replaced my MAF. I will take out the car later and test it out.

I have a C180 auto on a 1997 plate.

I was quoted £110 just to replace it by one merc specialist - and it has just taken me 10 mins. The rubber seal looked fine from the previous one although it was a bit hard trying to get the opposite end on - a smearing of washing up liquid helped the slide on though.

One question however - should the air filter cover be a snug fit? mine locks in place ok but does not seem to be a snug fit.

:D

Your filter should be a push fit, not absolutely tight, hard to describe, the air going into it is sucked in.

Good work on the MAF

The cover is normally on top of the actual filter and the MAF after the filter box, in which case there is no real issue with the cover not fitting properly. Clearly, if the gap allowed air to bypass the filter or the MAF then this would be a problem.
Normally though, the filter box cover is a good snug fit, if a bit fiddly. There shouldn't be any gaps.

Replacement MAF

What can I say but brilliant.

I have just taken the car out and the replacement MAF improves the car no end. Unbelievable.

Pulls better, no slowness in the gears from cold, ticks over smoothly, brilliant.

I purchased the brand new MAF from ebay - only cost £60. much better than the £280 that mb wanted. Just got to get the rear brake discs and pads fitted and I will be sorted on the cosmetic issues.

Thanx everyone for their help.:p
