Neither GSF nor Euro have them listed. Odd...

I did a bit of looking around and found this link: http://www.bba-reman.com/content.aspx?content=mercedes_a_class_air_mass_meter_and_ecu

It looks like these people remanufacture MAFs.

One thought though - if yours is kippered, they can sometimes be saved by thoroughly cleaning with isopropyl alcohol.

Remove the sensor, spray a load of isopropyl alcohol (available from Maplins) and allow it to dry naturally. Don't allow anything - not even your breath - to touch the inside of the sensor.

There's a chance that'll sort it, and if not, it was knackered anyway.

Bit of background information...

The MAF sits in the airflow between the air filter and the engine itself. It has a wire which is heated to a preset temperature by the engine's computer (ECU). When the engine sucks air in, the air cools the wire.
The ECU can measure the cooling effect and work out how much air is going in, and adjust the fuelling as required.
Any contamination on the wire will cause it to burn out, which is what sounds like has happened to yours.
It's REALLY important to make sure you change the airfilter regularly, and don't use any performance (K&N, Pipercross or whatever) filters. Just use a standard one. That should help the MAF last a bit longer when it is replaced.

That link above for the remanufacturing says they charge £140, which is a saight better than the original quote of £800!

I've Only Owned It Since Feb And Was Told It Was Fully Serviced But I Think That Was Bull. The Link Took Me To Ecu Rebuild , I'd Looked At Them Would This Be The Best Thing To Do. I've Had So Many People At Garages Try To Baffle Me With Car Lingo So They Can Rip Me Off , As I Know Absolutley Nothing About Them. My Dad's Offered To Fix It But Mercedes Said You Can't Even Get Near It Without The Right Equipment.

First question, did you get any warranty with the car?

If not, then it looks like you're stuck with shelling out some cash.

You can go to a Merc dealer and give them £800, or you can get your unit rebuilt (with a 2 year warranty) for either £140 or £250 - depends on the type.

I don't know about needing special equipment to remove it, but on my C class, and other cars I've changed the MAFs on, you just need a security torx screwdriver bit. They cost about a fiver for a set.

It's a tough call, 'cos either way your out of pocket, but it's up to you which way you go. There's a few independent Merc specialists who might be able to have a look and offer some more help.

Good luck with it :)

I Got A Care Protect Warranty Where They'll Pay The First £500, But Even Then I'd End Up Paying Out £300 Plus And It's Only Warranteed For A Year At Most . Think I'll Probably End Up Going With The Ecu Rebuild

Why dont you ask for the part number of the device and then shop around to check what you've been told is true.

To get the part nunber go to your parts dept. at Merc dealer with your car VIN. It's the long number for your car's identification. Anyone can go to the retail parts dept. not just trade.

They can print off a quote for you immediately which you can take away.

Then put that number on this forum and we can look around some of the parts databases and let you know the truth.

I know that fitting may be slightly difficult due to engine being between two floor layers on A class.

Get the part number from parts dept. and let us know.

Regards
