I bought Michelin HP XL for my W211 2 years ago to replace the continentals. The Michelins grip was excellent and lasted about 6 months longer than the contis. I have just replaced all 4 tyres with new Michelin HP's from costco - they were £16 per tyre cheaper than the best internet price and they have been filled with nitrogen. The ride is the smoothest and grippiest I've ever had. They're just brilliant.:D:D:D

and they have been filled with nitrogen.

Why would you do that?

She who asks a question is a fool for 5 minutes, she who doesn't is a fool for life - and that's the premise I'm working to.

Nitrogen in car tyres........

The benefits claimed for using nitrogen over compressed air for inflating tyres are that it:

Reduces the tyre’s running temperature
Improves the ride quality
Increases tyre life
Keeps tyre pressures more constant
Slows the rate of pressure loss
Doesn’t react with the tyre and rim materials

So, if you need to top up your tyre pressures you need to find a nitrogen pump. That's really convenient isn't it?.

We have a Nitrogen filling system in work for charging up balance weight systems on CNC machine tools. I would have thought you where over engineering your tyres - unless your driving a SLR that is!!!

I'll pop over for a fill-up then shall I? ;)

I had the tyres put on at Derby (pride park) costco. The ride is good with these new tyres but I don't know if its due to the nitrogen or due to the fact that I've put 4 new tyres on at once. I'm not sure how I'm going to fill the tyres up with nitrogen - its inconvenient going back to costco all the time. I'll probably replace any leakage with air.

CostCo are the cheapest if they stock your particular tyre. Only downside is you tend to have to drop your car off in the queue for fitting. At weekends they tell you this can stretch up to 4 hours. So the price and the nitrogen filling might suit, but the wait's not for everyone. Referring to CostCo at the Trafford Centre, Manchester btw.

I went on a saturday. They told me 2 hours but did it in 1 and a bit. Its worth the wait as I saved about £60 from the cheapest internet site.- and I got nitrogen, and a nice coffee.

And the best bit about CostCo is you get to choose your own tyres, if you want to. Nice to be able to select ones manufactured more recently (look at the little 4-number box imprinted on the sidewall, first 2 digits are week number, second 2 digits are year).

Thats useful to know, but do tyres 'deteriorate' with age?

Air is about 79% Nitrogen already. So (ignoring trace elements and global warming gases - of which there must be plenty around if the government is to be believed) you are only substituting 21% of the gas with nitrogen.

So if you couldn't find a Nitrogen top up point, by using air you would not be compromising the pure Nitrogen mix too much.

Yes indeed and the recommendations that I'm aware of are not to go beyond about 8 years.
This affects me seriously as I run both a low mileage and a very low mileage car. On the latter car 8 years is only 16000 miles.
So what is being said about Costco is that, assuming you know you will be on low mileage for the forseeable, you can select newly manufactured tyres to start with, not some from older stock.

I got a couple of tyres for our Jazz from Costco the other day (£39 each - eat your heart out :D ) and was bemused by the (very bright) green valve caps. I asked what they meant (I'd guessed anyway) and the guy looked at me as if I was completely moronic and said "it's 'cos they've got nitrogen in them" as if tyres had never been filled with anything else.

I had a fairly heated discussion with Costco last time I got tyres there they insisted on putting them on the back. This time I carried the wheels in, which was much less stressful (although I half expected them to refuse to do them).

I did wonder about how pointless nitrogen would be if you changed the pressure now and again - we tend to use the Jazz for airport trips before which I'll blow the tyres up to full pressure and then let them down again afterwards. So I guess I'm diluting the nitrogen content!

Having said that, apparently nitrogen doesn't tend to leak out as the molecules are bigger. Therefore, over time, if you keep topping air filled tyres up then you'd surely end up with them mainly containing nitrogen anyway?

I belive Lexus used nitrgen for their big LSalons in the early 90s, claimed it gave a better ride. I sure would like to try it, if anyone knows a dealer apart from costco. problem is, air is free to the tyre fitters, where they will have to buy nitrogen in...........so you'd end up paying something, though not sure how much

Its not pure nitrogen in the tyre anyhow , the tyre is filled with air and then nitrogen is added to bring it up to the desired pressure so there is always air in the tyre

Garages realised the public would never pay for air , so they decided to sell nitrogen ;):):)
