Hi. Please can someone help, have a massive problem here.

Our mercedes clk 230 hasn't been started for about 3 months now. Our battery is in the boot and the key to the boot doesn't work. Worst still, our key isn't turning to jump start it as its an electronic key. Why I bought a Merc I dunno!

We don't have the money to throw at this as we're skint and we need to get it started to sell it :(

Please help! We're located in Epping in essex.

Thanks,

Matt :(

You may have a panel up on the firewall with a plastic cover, take this off and see if there are 2 terminals where you can join up a battery charger, this will enable you to open the boot and charge the battery.

If it is that flat, I would not attempt to jump start it

Malcolm, thanks for this. Where is the firewall located in a 1999 clk?

If we can get some power to the car, at least then we can press the boot key to open it. The other problem is, because its so dead the key in the ignition won't turn and the steering lock is on, so there is no way to jump start it unfortunately.

Thanks for all your help.

Matt.

The fire wall is the metal panel under the screen under the bonnet.

You could do a lot of damage by jump starting it

I would charge the battery via the positive point under the bonnet on the ns,like malcolm suggests jump starting could cause damage.

Is that located on the right or the left under the screen and do you have to take out a lot of stuff to get to it?

Thanks,

Matt.

Hi. I've got a 12v battery jump starter pack winging its way to me now.

Ok one thing a friend did mention is the keyfob, by the car being dead for 3 months do you know if it will affect the alarm and potentially stop the keyfob from working again? i.e. all codes lost :(

Let me know...

Thanks,

Matt.

If anyone can advise whether starting my car after a full battery charge will affect the keyfob or won't start the car at all I'd appreciate it. That is our biggest worry though that the alarm will be screwed up or something...

Thanks,

Matt.

First if the key unlocks and locks the car, then the alarm should be turned off, this being the case the key should start the car.

Jumper packs are not good,,also the key should never be left in when charging the battery

Why?
Sorry to hijack the post.

Why ??? ¥ƕdžǣɛȹʦʬϢ↑↕→⌐∞ ℗℗╬♫☺┴

With a DAS key,, its insertion into the ignition activates the wake up circuit, these are delicate circuits, when charging is going on, the voltages are higher than normal, this can erase the delicate ROMs built into the keys.

Sometimes when a key has lost its memory it can be got back by leaving the key in for up to 90 mins, but this has only worked 3 times on here

Malcolm thanks again. So before doing the firewall part, remove the key from the ignition and if the boot opens, then do not leave the key in while charging the battery! Got it!

thanks again,

Matt.

Blimey! i jump start my car regularly! or at least try to! every time the air in fuel stops it starting! sorry if im hijacking a bit here, but is there a reason it seems to ake charge from the running car to my car batt, but when i crank it, it uses my own battery, not the donor battery im jumping it from? and does that also mean that i shouldnt be jump starting other people's cars from mine?

Your car is fairly safe with only a few DAS problems on the later cars, jump starting to this car is best done with the key out while connecting up then inserting the key and start.

The other way around does not matter as your car is supplying the power, and not receiving any.

The voltages are never excessive as with a start jump box, and these have a partial square wave output, with loads of spikes. This is because the 12 volt from the internal battery is converted to AC, amplified via a chopper circuit ( terrible spikes and fly back pulses) then put back to DC, well thats DC of a fashion.
