manual, merc 220d c class- epc problem

Hi, posted this on Engine,Drivetrain, Fuel & Exhaust recently thought i'd try here aswell. P Plate manual diesel merc 220d C Class - drives fine till the EPC light comes on, then will only rev to 2000rpm and surges. It will only run in 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear, if put into 4th or 5th it dies. If the ignition is momentarily switched off it can cure the fault for a few seconds or for a few miles, does not matter if the car is cold or warm it just kicks off at any time. It can run for miles & miles perfectly one day, then next day from cold it's playing up. Have had lots of ideas and suggestions but nothing too specific,was hoping we were not the only one to experience this particular problem.It makes the car pretty useless to use.
