Morning guys,

We have had a few people on the forum talking about some insight into what we do! So i thought i would start a little something so that people can ask questions and also bring to light anything they have learnt!

Lets start with!!!

COMMUNICATION!!!

This is the easiest part (Pretty much) to the whole process as you are simply pulling the .bin file from the vehicle which has its current maps and setting. Hardware you can use for OBD protocols are as follows, KessV2, Genius, CMD, Byteshooter, MPPS, SMPPS, Galletto ect....

One thing i would always recommend and thats dont get any chinese clones as the hardware is not Eurpoean spec and you get no support like you do with Alientech, Dimsport and CMD.

Now 99% of companies merely pull the data off the vehicle to then send to a hand full of companies who can actually tune the vehicle. Now many people get rung up on "Dyno" results which is massively important and we are constantly on the dyno tuning vehicles! But more importantly is finding quality tunes as you can always make power but in the wrong way. For instance our old 997 911 Turbo had already been tuned and made wicked power but the file was all over the place and by improving the fuelling tables making some parts leaner and others richer power drastically increased alond with a smoother running engine and also fuel economy went up.

As a matter of interest, can someone from outside your area (o'seas say) be instructed on how to pull the .bin file and send it to you for alteration and return for reinstallation?
Already have my current vehicle (ML270) remapped by an Aussie outfit but am looking at a new MB motorhome with V6 3.0 litre motor in near future. Would be interested in knowing if you guys could remap to remove the egr and dpf which will come with it. Think the power side will be adequate standard.

Good afternoon guys,

Well anything bought off ebay will be a cloned tool and would stay well clear! We use KessV2 and CMD for OBD protocols and the whole Alientech system is shared with the Genius platform so no point buying both as you are buying twice!

We chose KessV2 over the genius system as the Genius is touch screen and can be alittle slow where as the KessV2 system runs off your laptop or computer and ours are pretty powerful :p Also we know Alientech very well they look after us alot for development and support ect....

Yes this is very simple as like i mentioned before the communication side is pretty easy and it holds your hand the whole way through! As for your vehicle we have small, personnal hand held units specifically for vehicles that locks to your VIN and is used only for your vehicle.

This one is on its way to Oz as we speak for a Jeep, so basically a mini version of the KessV2 system but can hold multiple maps and only works for your vehicle so we can have a performance map, economy map, blended map and have all files with DPF off and EGR off solutions.

I'd be interested to hear what hardware is needed to tinker with my newer ECU (2012 C350 CDI Sport Estate) - my ideal scenario would be to have the "Power" map as it is now, handling things above 80% throttle, but also to be able to tweak the very light throttle (say 10-15%) cells under 2k rpm to further refine economy.

Had something similar for my Focus TDCi and it worked well, the current map on the Impreza also responds well to a light throttle touch rather than a heavy one, giving improved MPG over standard...well, on the rare occasion it gets pottered lol.

I do think mapping has the potential to give the best of both worlds here. I do potter a lot - it's relaxing and traffic often requires it - but equally I also get my toe down every so often. No reason a map should give good economy (improved over stock) for the former, and improved oomph for the latter.

I'd be interested to talk further about such a "hybrid" map Anthony/Gary :)

Expect a heavy bill for equipment for communication to the EDC17 platform! Mega money thats why theres not a great deal of the mapping community doing tri-core or anything TPROT!!!

Pop me an email and we can talk Hybrid further. Its not the same with Diesel as so much is done on calculations as aposed to balancing AFR's, IAT's and part throttle maps but this is for a later edition of Mapping 101 ;)

Heh, I can imagine!

Yeah, I've no direct experience with Diesel mapping like I have with petrol, so there's plenty I don't know. It was fairly easy with petrol to do a quick light load type map, but that's not where the primary focus is typically....well, not when you map various Imprezas :)

I do think a hybrid map would appeal to a lot of people, as many seem to worry about economy when going for a performance map, even though that should remain largely unchanged unless you sit at 80% throttle all the time of course :)

Actually, my last mail to you (Anthony) was regarding a Hybrid map...

ok, so are there any issues to using the 'ebay' type tools? ie can they be wholly responsible for issues that wouldnt occur with genuine kit?


my next question. things like boost pressure etc. how do you know where the limits are? is there a tell tale somewhere in the standard map that gives the max levels of boost (or fuel, torque etc) that can be handled by the stock set-up?

We highly recommend not getting anything form Ebay as everything on there are cheap chinese clones! The issue is never reading a vehicle as you are simply making a carbon copy technically! The issue is cloned hardware, cloned software with illegal cracks what if it does not pull the whole file??? If 1KB is missing and you then write it back you will have a non starting vehicle and no way of getting your .ori (Original) file because when writting to an ECU everything is wiped first in the flash.
