I am new to this forum, hoping that someone can help with my Mass Airflow Sensor issues.
Mercedes CLK 200 Elegance Kompressor Automatic Coupe 2001.

Engine Management Light came on a few weeks ago

Error code says problems with Mass Airflow Sensor. A new Sensor was bought (Not a cheap one) and fitted, after 1 day light came on again with code saying the same problem.

Sensor was replaced by supplier and fitted, this happened again 2 more times.

When the new MAF is fitted the car runs very well and MPG increases but after 1 day or 15 miles the engine light returns. I am of the belief that the MAF is not faulty but that the issue is something else.

There are no blockages or splits in connecting pipes.

Can anyone please help.

Sure. We need to know exactly:

A) what diagnostic system is being used to read the dtcs.
B) what dtcs are being returned?

Right. Your code reader won’t make head or tails of MB’s dtc structure. You will need either:
Xentry
Star

(Independent MB specialists will have either of these)

Or:
ICarsoft i980
ICarsoft MB-II

(These can be bought for ~£100-120)

Without those to tell you exactly what the car is recognising as a fault, you can keep throwing parts at it until the cows come home and it won’t be fixed...

What that code is saying is that the calculated mass airflow and the measured mass airflow don't match up.
The calculated air flow is based on the throttle position and MAP sensor if fitted.
You could have a bad TPS (adjustment perhaps), bad MAP sensor (if fitted), an air leak or bad connections/wiring to the MAF.

Your best bet is to take it to someone who knows how to interpret live data and can check what is reported against what is realistic. You don't say where you are but if you're near Bristol Steve at Avantgarde is recommended.

Don’t think it is worth spending that much on this issue.
Thanks

It's £50-60.

A new MAF is £100.

It's worth getting the problem diagnosed properly than doing it yourself in a half-a$$ed way.

That rather makes my point then doesn’t it? You’re throwing money in the form of new parts at a problem you haven’t identified yet. You don’t know how to identify the problem so you can’t know which parts to replace to fix it. So, you need to identify the problem. Only, you don’t know how to do you need to pay someone to do it. And that costs around £60.

By the way, I had a similar issue. New MAF didn’t solve it. After hours of mucking around including time with LK above, I took it to an Indy. Turns out that a family of mice had encamped between the cylinder heads, weed all over the auto adaptation sensors and destroyed one. So, getting the problem properly diagnosed will save you a fortune.

Either that or the car isn’t worth another £60 to you...

Like mine the compressor engine suffers from a few issues mainly around dirt build up (dirt mainly petrol gum) around the air intakes and secondary intakes (compressor end) and inlets. There’s good guides in this forum but basically it involves removing the inlet manifold and cleaning out some brass tubes that get blocked as well as the throttle bodies etc. Replacing with new gaskets. Making sure all pipes are clean.

But as Stated might be better to get it diagnosed but not sure it will tell you this.

Where do you live?

With that mileage - It's a long thread but worth reading re breather pipes etc. Explains what I was saying above. Parts are cheap (Circa £20.00) but much labour. Can be done by yourself but takes time and worth cleaning everything out at the same time.

Does anyone know if the issue with the oil breather pipes etc. will show up on the diagnostics?
