There was a big fuel protest planned for Grangemouth today which meant the Police jumped into action and put out a lot of 'No Parking' cones.

Driving in this morning, expecting to have to run the gauntlet, I was surprised at the number of police there...and very few other people. By 10am, the crowd had swollen to about 50 and the TV cameras turned up and everybody huddled round them so as it looked like there was hundreds of people there. It actually looked quite a big deal on the telly. The telly said there was about 200 people there...that would be including the police perhaps.

what i am bemused by is why protest outside a refinery? it is the governement tax issues causing the problem with fuel pricing. and while we have an election campaign going on, now is the time to follow the labour poilcticians round and heckle them. then the protesters will get favoroable coverage as the politicians will be unable to control themsleves with rage.

maybe it is me but the organisers need to have a better understanding of how to hurt politicians.

the road blockages on the motorway hurt a bit. but refinery protests will have no effect other than on that refinery itself.

the reason it worked last time was due to the safety issue!
the reffinery's said it was unsafe to let the tankers out due to the protesters
what? some protester is going to strap a bomb to himself and blow a tanker up? me thinks not!!
i was driving an artic at the time and got a lot of hassle for blasting past the slow moving convoy of tractors and wagons because i refused to sit at 40 on a motorway, why should i?
sorry but half of the protesters i saw were farmers and they dont pay full whack for their diesel anyway!
the only way to do it right (in my opinion) is block the ports in and out like the frogs do!
i live in leeds so it wouldn't affect me and thats why its such a good idea

We also wondered what the reason was to protest outside a refinery...I don't why they didn't protest outside our nice parliment building.

They did have a point though, petrol works out about $8/gallon in the UK...the yanks were freaking out when it was set to go above $2.

It costs about £800 to fill up a lorry with diesel...most of us could buy a car for that!

yeah.....planes pay 15p a litre for JetA1. wish we ran that eh?

thats only £26,550 for a one way fuel load to US from london in a 747. which is £66.38 per passenger for the 3000 or so miles....or better still 2p a mile per passenger. or £8 a mile per plane.

Might do a new calc for the new A380 when i find out its load factors.
