MB inbuilt stereo

Hi everyone,

is it possible to replace the MB inbuilt stereo with an MP3 Player stereo and would the controls on the stearing-wheel column still work?

Yes it is possible to replace it but no as far as I know, no one has come up with an interface where you can control it from the wheel (or use the dash display). There are plenty of MP3 interface units available, that pretend to be cd players so you can use them asif they are MB cd players and keep the best of both worlds. Also, many newer mb cd changers play MP3s (I have 780 tracks on my CD changer).

hhmm, lots of cars these days have controls on the steering wheel column, I wonder why they've not adapted them?...surely its a matter of a few extra wires?! no?> lol

but yes, good tip about the mp3 cd changer...though I really dont like the look of the inbuilt stereo dashboard and would love to get rid of it! Might just have to do without the controls.

Jberks is correct with what he says, its far away from just a few wires to do this.

I did once look into thisvarious companies do steering wheel adapters , and it is possible, here is the adapter for c-Coupe when using alpine unit.

they say that the ignition lot has to be removed at mercedes though,,i figured it wouldnt be worth the money or time!

Do you have an Audio 10 head unit? If so you don't need any adapter or ugly-fitting stereos - you just need to upgrade the stock Audio 10 to a newer one - about £500 from a Mercedes dealer or £150 direct from the manufacturer in Germany. The updated unit also talks fibre - so you can connect an existing CD-changer. All dash display/controls still work too.

Just make sure you buy the right one - one has a curved front, the other is perfectly rectangular. I guess this depends on the age of your car.

One forum I read stated the newer models *do* play mp3, but - mp3 isn't listed in the specs. I've read similar things elsewhere - so may be worth confirming this
