Not asked yet - to be honest I've looked at previous messages and getting VERY mixed messages - it seems that unless it's a brand new key out the box it cannot be re-programmed at all - which makes it a pointless purchase!

Also if the dealer's gonna charge £60 to re-programme and the key is £50 then I can't be bothered, I like the look, but not THAT much!

I love these new Chrome keys for the Merc's.

HOWEVER - can anyone tell me if this :- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120390901452&fromMakeTrack=true

Will work with a W208 CLK with re-coding and will my already cut blade work in it?

I don't have a part number for it, and I've asked the seller, but wanted some opinion from the experts here.

I have these chrome keys and yes they are nice but they are either in a drawer, your pocket or in the ignition so does it really matter what they look like?

Well, not entirely... ;)

One of the 3-button keys that came with my 2004 W211 E320 had a split in the rubber diaphragm that covered the unlock button. I looked at the Mercedes' keys on eBay and was quite amazed at what people were paying for them. Absolutely silly money in some cases, especially for the chrome ones. The sellers were usually annoyingly vague about whether the key could be reprogrammed to another vehicle, or not.

I did a lot of research into reprogramming and couldn't find anyone who was able to reprogramme one of these keys. Mercedes said it wasn't possible, but being cynical, I wondered if it was more a case of them preferring to sell new keys at ridiculous prices. I suppose it depends on how the key code is written into the memory. If it is burnt in and cannot be subsequently erased or overwritten, then the key is only of use with the original vehicle. I suspect this to be the case. I also expect a lot of eBay buyers become eBay sellers and re-auction their Mercedes' key when they find it cannot be reprogrammed.

I bided my time on eBay and eventually picked up a mint 3-button key for £16. I then transferred the internal PCB from my damaged key and ended up with a perfect replacement key.

My advice is, only buy an eBay Mercedes' key for spare parts (like the case/cover or the small coil inside that can break its wires). And don't succumb to auction fever and pay over the top ;)
