Our cars that do that sort of mileage have the oil and filter changed between 2-4 times a year (despite using the correct spec and premium stuff). It was always said that short trips don’t do the oil any favours so swap it out more often.

I’m old school and refuse to believe the magic oil of today is the next best thing since sliced bread but, do believe it’s all part of the illusion to provide skin flints with lower servicing costs and generate greater income for the industry with premature failures.

Have you ever noticed that Mercedes spec oil does not contain an API or ACEA B1...2..3..4 or A 1...2 ...3 etc. on the container

If you diy it it’s £30 with a filter ? I would still do it yearly , but that’s me . I’ve got issues .

I buy the oil in 20L tubs , oil filter maybe £6-8 bought in sales . The £30 is probably fairly close to accurate on my current old garage stocks . But as you know prices have all increased recently

Will the engine oil suction pump fully remove all the oil through the dipstick port? 6.5 ltr in the W203,thinking of getting one. Then there is the oil filter the paper type in the housing to remove.

Theoretically yes it should however, when ever I have changed the oil using a suction pump, no matter how much wiggling around I do and ensure there’s nothing left, my fresh oil turns golden to brown/black very quickly! A lot of garages and dealers even use suction pumps now.

So I went back to draining via the sump plug, refill and my oil stays golden even after 6,000 miles!

I suck on petrol and diesel, petrol stays clean, diesel is dirty again almost immediately. It’s not an issue though

I tried the sucker pump on the petrol Volvos and couldn’t work out why the oil would change colour from golden to dirty almost immediately so went back to using the drain plug.

Diesels I know are just plain dirty

The correct engine oil spec is key, think the sevice shop is probably worth the extra.

You can keep the diesel engine's oil clear and golden colour if you change the oil every 500 miles or less, I did this for over 5000 miles on my Volvo and still had very clear oil. Then it got expensive when I left that company I worked for and within another 2000 odd miles the colour slowly went black :(

Run in around town yesterday, temp gauge touching up on just over 75,the engine oil will be running thinner with this heat I expect.
