A lot of talk about thermostats on here lately ,I checked mine last night and its barely reaching 50 degrees . so do I go with mb or aftermarket ?? Anyone with exp of both .

Also do I need to buy the whole housing or does the old stat pull out and new one fit in .

Different car, but on mine the MB dealer tried very hard to sell me the housing saying it would never work just to change the thermostat and said it was a "special request" or something to just buy thermostat alone. It's rubbish as the housing is just a piece of metal so should never wear out and paid under 25 quid for the "special order" thermostat so didn't see much point in going aftermarket. It came with a seal as well.

MB, there's only a few quid in it.

The Circoli version doesn't have a thread tapped into it for the engine cover stud to mount on to.

The actual thermostat does come out of the housing and can be swapped out but that just adds another 5 minutes to a 20 minute job.

Circoli £ 35 not sure if temp sender is present. Mb £ 60 temp sender present with new gasket . I,ll be fitting the mb version in the morning . :p

With the car facing uphill, just loosen the thermostat and you will not lose much water, saves draining.

Cheers for tip, you tube recommends syphoning header tank. I've bought 1.5 ltr of coolant also ,just in case . hopefully I,ll see 90 on the gauge and mpg improves.

The nice thing about a diesel is no electrics as such, I just undo them and the water finds its own level.

They all are, but what I do is to just squeeze the bottom hose a couple of times once up to running temp and the thermostat open with the filler cap off.

Is the 320 engine self bleeding ?

Fairly certain it is, you'll only lose about 1lt or so if the bonnet is facing down hill.

If I do mine again I'll park it facing up the drive as Malc's advice.

If you get a behr one from GSF, its the same as the genuine item. Think they are £35 from memory.

The circoli ones from ECP are ok too. Fitted them a few times.

And btw, the thread for the engine cover mount is never tapped, not even on the genuine ones!!

£ 44 from gsf ,,The mb one is indeed a behr and none of the 5 holes are threaded. Anyone know torque setting for gasket bolts ?? Thanks

Parked up on the curb, syphoned expansion tank , removed old thermostat , had to lift oil filter housing out to access one of the bolts , lost zero fluid in the process , 2 holes on the housing you have to run the bolts in to cut a thread. Refilled fluid , ran engine checked for leaks , boxed everything up and went for a run, happy to report dash now registers around 90 degrees . happy days.
