Can someone tell me whether the post 2000 C and E class diesels have cam chains or belts ?

I'm keen to move to a diesel but not if it means going back to to cam belts.

cheers Vin

If its any good the 320CDI, straight 6, has great power and while maybe not said to be as smooth as petrol definitely has more torque and is slower revving. More enjoyable for long joureny and more relaxed drive. Chains too...no belts.

I have to agree. Had a 320CDI as a loaner for a week. Initially I was disapointed about how crude it was as against the v6 petrol.
After 2 days I didn't want to give it back. I stopped noticing the increased noise, which you can't really hear with the radio on, and just revelled in that wall of torque. Just endless power in any gear. Its fun to drive and I want one!! Not sure about the 220CDI though - possibly the worst of both worlds, though good MPG I suppose.

Well got 270 CDI, now six months old. Started to be a bit noisy, little disappointed. Still feel oddles of power. Never driven 320 CDI. Any one knows if it is world of difference from mine? Fuel economy, well not that good on mine. Town driving + a bit of straight roads or motorway etc., average around 31MPG.

V6 C320CDI at 100mph is turning just under 2500rpm

suspect from other threads that E320 I6 is geared for better acceleration but torque spread immense and of course an extra 200cc as the 320V6 is really a 300TD
