Hi There, When driving in a straight line with no hands on the wheel do you see your steering wheel 'pulsing' sightly from side to side?. If so you could have a wheel balance problem and with low profiles could affect your braking.

No i cannot feel it through the steering wheel it just seems to be coming from the front its similar to driving over a rough surface there is no problem with light braking

I have bought faulty disc in the past and have had to return them, just because they are new it is no guarantee that they are perfect as cast iron can distort quite easily.

Get someone to sit in the car with you as a second opinion. The vibration is more likely to be rear discs, not front.

This will be the case if you cant feel it on the steering wheel.

thanks everyone

Yes it does seem to be coming from the back offside. is it as easy as replacing the front disks or could it be just the pads or a sticking piston caliper

Some times I forget that the rear can go often as they only get 28% of the braking force applied to them.

Easy to do, when the road wheel is off. do chock the wheels and be on level ground as the vehicle must be out of P and the parking brake off.

turn the hub, looking through the hole provided locate with the aid of a torch the parking brake adjuster and back this off anti clock wise several clicks ( it is at the rear of the hub level with the canter) remove the single screw from the face of drum.

You do need to remove the rear caliper , this is held on with 2 bolts on the rear, you do not need to remove the pads though new one should be used on new disc. if you remove complete with the pads you will have to force them back a little to clear the ridge on the disc. Do have something of the right height to rest the caliper on as it must not hang on the pipe.

The drum / disc will now come off if too tight back off the adjuster more.

The re fitting is the reverse.

I would be suprised if you have a caliper problem. It will probably be rear pads holding a bit of moisture & causing a rust spot on the disc. Why it only rusts the rear I don't know. When you wash the car, go for a quick spin round the block afterwards to dry the pads out. This will "help" in the future - no guarantees though.

Don't know if this will help. I bought a CLK320 some years back now that had a similar problem (felt like cats-eyes or very harsh ABS cutting in). The rear inner pad on one side had got seized in the caliper body and the inner face of the disc was completely rusted. The caliper itself was fine and new discs & pads plus a thorough clean sorted it. I think some of these cars do a fair bit of sitting around (particularly convertables) and this leads to some seizure issues.

Hi,
If you,ve eliminated the disks i would look for worn suspension bushes in particular the lower arms.

It is a well known fact that cars that are only ever lightly braked can get rear disc problems.

When living in Sweden where salt is in abundance in the winter it was necessary to do quite a lot of hard braking to keep the rust off the rear disc.

I think it was 2002 that I drove my V70R to Stansted air port through snow and salt and parked it there for 4 weeks. When I returned and drove the car, there was a loud thumping from the rear. The off side brake disc had split into two disc all the way round.

Heard from boys in the trade that some German made discs seem to suffer badly from corrosion in last few years, particularly Audi's.
