My 1986 Merc 420SL has a new battery, fuel pumps checked, immobiliser removed, ignition module already replaced a month ago and recently serviced.

It seems to stall after about an hour of driving - all warning lights on the dash flask on, then there is no power. It starts up again within a few mins and can be fine for an hour before the same again, sometimes quicker.

Any ideas? One idea suggested is the crankshaft sensor - any other ideas please?

Thanks in advance.

The key barrells can also cause this

No luck so far...any other ideas?

Thank you for suggestions.

1. Crank shaft sensor checked - all ok.
2. Ignition barrel checked - ok.
3. Ignition module is highly unlikely to be wrong as the original (not proven as faulty) was replaced by a quality second hand place and highly unlikely (according to experienced Merc mechanic) to be wrong.

Any other ideas please? Turning into a real mystery...

When the lights come on when driving, these are the same lights that come on before you turn the key, this shows that the engine has stopped, how did you check the crankshaft sensor

Hi

Did you find out what was causing the problem? I am having exactly the same with my 1988 420SL. I haven't tried a new crank shaft sensor yet but that's my next step unless you have any other ideas?

Thanks
MArtin
