Hi everyone.

Need some help please !

My A class went into limp mode and behind the dashboard it started to smoke until the battery was disconnected.

Is this a common problem for A Class and is it an easy problem to fix ?

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

I don't think this is a common problem and sadly is not likely to be an easy fix.

Sounds like something is shorting big style under the dash, so first advice is do not reconnect the battery, rather find a local independent Mercedes repair shop and talk directly to them.

Thanks for the reply

I wonder if its a heater core issue but I certainly won't be re-connecting the battery as the car may catch fire.

How complicated is it to replace the wiring loom behind dashboard ?

I would remove the under dash panels, the connect up the battery while looking under the dash to see what is smoking

I would leave it in a deserted car park and connect a really big battery to it and walk away.

A Class 2001 edition.

Was it possible to tell which area of the dashboard the smoke was coming from?

The A-Class is known to suffer from ignition switch problems, maybe this has burnt out? (Happened to me on my Vauxhall Cavalier, some years ago. As soon as I turned the ignition on there was smoke coming from the ignition switch area).

Other areas to look; the connectors on the headlamp switch are known to get a bit warm/melt. The wiring loom to the headlamp switch sometimes chafes on the metal cross member behind the dash.

I wouldn't reconnect the battery without first removing the relevant parts of the dash to have a good look, as already suggested by Television. I hope this helps.

Its not a bad thing, I assume you have Fire cover if so reconnect battery and walk away.

Light switches are also suspect on the w168

Ours stopped working , took it apart , inside was melted everywhere. Common problem apparently.
