I have this diesel merc, it has only done 41000 miles on a P plate 1997.The problem is the EPC light comes on intermitenly and the car will only drive in a limp home mode in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear only , when put into 4th it does not respond at all and dies. Turn the ignition on and off momentarily and the car comes to life again and can run fine for a while. If any one can give me some advice on what the problem is I would be grateful. Many thanks.

Hi George,
We could guess as to what but it could be one of many things. I suggest you get the fault codes from the ECU. It's probably just a sensor that needs changing but without the code its hard to say. A local specialist will be able to interrogate it for you.

thanks for that, have tried local fault code people but they cannot be specific, it is reading several faults on the fuel system. I was hoping someone else might have had the same problem and be able to tell me exactly what it is without spending a heap of money on it. cheers

Is it auto? If it is it sounds like a duff 'box. The only cure is an exchange one because MB will not supply parts, even to auto g'box specialists. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt and a bill for over £2.75K.

I do not belive it to be true that MB will not supply parts. The guys in the USA repair their own. All parts of the gearbox are listed as spares. I also believe that under UK law they cannot refuse to sell parts.

Thanks for all the help. Have read through everything and will try out a few of the things suggested to see if any help solve the problem. The car is a manual, sorry ,forgot to put that down. Keep throwing ideas my way, any help is much appreciated. I will report back if there's any result. cheers.
