jennifer,

that your garage suggested this forum seems good

what year and exactly what model is your car please?

oops I just noticed you already said 2002!

malcolm,

looking at the chain sprocket diagram, if the chain were loose it would likely slip a tooth on the crankshaft sprocket, it would then be guesswork as to what happens next.

seems more likely that the right hand cam shaft jammed first then chain slipped on its sprocket, the garage mentioned oil change maybe being polite or because they think oil had something to do with right hand cam shaft slipping/jamming

Yes there is more to this than meets the eye,,was that cam adjuster leaking badly and a big oil loss. The oil pressure must have fallen to nil with the tensioner doing nothing, have the cams seized,,, so many possibles here

jennifer,

do you sometimes check engine oil level on the speedo computer? if so was it ok?

did you notice any oil leak from engine ie any oil on your parking space?

we have recently had 2x of these 271 engines with alleged slipped timing on this forum. what the garage are saying is plausible it seems. also i cannot quibble with the quoted charges for prior work. i suspect that we will know all about this 271 problem soon enough.

Never known a timing chain to jump on this engine, but theres always a 1st, esp if the chain tensioner had siezed and the chain allowed to "rattle" causing more wear. If you turn these engines over by hand with the tensioner removed, the right hand cam will snatch/jump due to the spacing of the lobes and if the chain is worn this can be worse.

In reply to Ritchie, no I didnt notice any loss of oil at my car park space at all, I put 1 litre of oil in the car about 2 months ago when the message 1.0L of engine oil popped up on my screen.

I went down to the garage tonight and had a look at the car, they are saying that the timing belt keeps jumping from the teeth ( if this makes sense :D). I think they want me to find out some information on this forums as they are puzzled and dont know what is wrong with the car. They are short staffed and said they are scared to strip it down until the find out or have an idea of whats up with it at all.

Hi Malcolm and Ritchie, do you have any other suggestions for me as to what the garage can do next to solve this problem?

most likely somebody will post something useful tonight

as for putting 1 litre of oil in 2 months ago, has this been a regular occurrence? were you thinking that the engine was consuming oil?

if what is being said is correct the garage must know full well if the slipping chain has already resulted in damage to the valves/pistons, if it has the cylinder head will need to be removed to repair damage

is it possible they just don't want to take the job on? have they said why they started to replace things like the maf sensor before realising that the chain was slipping - something a bit strange about this? was the engine very noisy when you drove car to garage?

personally I would be thinking about having a second opinion locally, a main Mercedes dealer for example or an independent inspection

Jennifer

point is we think that as described what has happened will have damaged the engine to the point where it will be expensive to repair

need to know if valves/pistons have been damaged

best strategy is do nothing until you know exactly what has happened to engine by way of damage

Yes I believe thats the issue, they are short staffed and dont know much about mercedes and to be honest I really dont think they can be bothered with the hassle. They garage owner suggested that I try this forum and see if there was anyone that could help me identify and solve the problem, though I suggested that if they cant fix my car then I was going to get my car towed to a dealer locally called Merparts whp specialise in mercedes and who can probably tell me what the problem is but the garage owner said that they would charge me a fortune to look at my car and even then may not be able to fix it. I really am at my wits end with it all as I dont have a clue about cars myself and when I put my car into the garage I expected them to be able to fix the car or at least tell me what the problem was instead I have had to try and fid out myself how to sort this out.

Sorry to bombard you with this message but I am trying to pass on as much information as possible incase someone may be able to help me fix this.

i suggest that the valve timing be checked - not tricky to do and will confirm if the timing has moved. i say again, we have had 2x on THIS forum recently with the 271 engine that have had jumped timing.

Star,

when you mentioned previously about the rattling noise due to tensioners seizing, it brought something back to me, months ago I can remember hearing a rattling noise now and again in my car to be honest I thought it may be something in my boot and never paid anymore thought to it!! If this is what has happened and the tensioners have seized up would this equate to the right camshaft sprockets jumping teeth etc??

Brill Merparts its practically 10 minutes from the garage where my car is, I called them today and told them of my situation and they said they would charge me 60 per hour and would try and diagnose the problem within an hour so I think I will get my car towed to their garage tom and see if they can assist.

Thanks again, I'll let you's know how I get on.
