Cant really understand why the garage cant do a timing check ..any competent mechanic could check the valve/piston timing on an engine ...main thing is to make sure that the engine is turning..simple to remove the plugs and do this .. If you dont have any mercedes independamt mechanics near to you is there a merc dealership nearby... go along there find out who the mechanics are.. always ask who is the best ..then politely ask if he will go along and have a look at your car.. im sure he will do that for you and that may be your best bet..

Thanks for all your help, I will mention to the garage tom about the tensioners and see if thats the cause of it all. If they are still stumped and unwilling to help I will then get my car towed to the merc specialists Merparts.

Will update you tom.

I use a USB PDF for all of the thousands of info sheets that I send out.
I had not thought of it on this but why not,,then I can print out at my leisure

jennifer,

any garage worth its salt would have told you

EITHER there is a timing chain problem, we need more info to fix

OR the timing chain has slipped and caused damage internally to valves pistons

GET YOUR CAR AWAY FROM THERE

Can anyone help me??

Does any one have any suggestions as to what I can ask the garage to check with my car?

They told me to let you's know that the problem they have is that timing chain has slipped and the right camshaft sprocket is jumping two or three teeth when they turn the engine by hand.

They are stuck for answers can anyone suggest what they can do now? I think they were going to take the head off the car and check the tensioners.

Has anyone experienced this before??

Thanks

If the timing chain has stretched badly maybe that is the problem,,it would be nice to have a picture of the cam sprockets

It would be a big help if the mechanic who is working on the car and recommended this forum could come online and let us know what he has found and done to the car.

That way we would at least have an idea of what the problem is and possibly help him rectify it.

In all honesty I would be inclined to move the car from his premises before he has a chance to do any further damage.

If he is a qualified mechanic with even the simplest of basic skills he would know how to at least diagnose this problem and give a full description.

If he was worth his salt he would come onto the forum himself and ask questions himself, I can't believe he has asked a customer to join the forum and ask the questions.

Jennifer, there are plenty of good mechanics out there who know what they are doing, and who have the skills to diagnose your problem. You say you are only 10 minutes from Merparts, but if the £60.00 per hour is too expensive I know another garage about 20 minutes closer to Glasgow who I can highly recommend. No it isn't a Mercedes garage, but a proper hands on old fashioned garage where the mechanics are not affraid to get their hands dirty. I have been dealing with them for almost 25 years and they have never let me down.

Hi thanks for your help, I will go down at 5pm and see him in the garage and stress my concerns and see if he has got to the root of the problem if not I will try Merparts and see how I get on.

Thanks again

Hi my engine has been stripped and they said that they think its defo the valves that have been damaged so they will replace them thank god its gettin sorted.

Folks I have another question I have a Merc C180 Sport so I have two seats in the back of the car but there is a space in the middle for a child but only two seatbelts. Is there anyway I can get another seatbelt fitted or an adaptor?

Thanks
