Hi
Well recently i had a family member borrow my car when there was a downpoor of rain (wish i never) and she recently when threw a BIG puddle of water and the car conked out in the puddle so the AA man arrived pulled her out and said the car didnt start because the air filter was drenched in wateR... So he got it started (the arse shouldnt of started it i know) and it was makeing a cogging noise so when i found out was shocked and nearly died! Knew staright away water would of entered the engine so anyway....Have changed the oil, oil filter ,air filter twice now to make double shore, Started it took it for a long drive and it now works fine but its not 100% it makes a chugging noise when idleing but is ok when driving ...:D

There is also a tapping noice coming fom the engine any ideas of what these two things could be???:(

Sorry to here of your woes.

Worst case i suppose it could be a bent con rod!

Might be worth having a compression test done.

Thanks Ellsy I read the post and could not think of anything.


Would it be possible to use something as a stethoscope to hear if the noise is from the top or bottom of the engine, and try and work out if it is a knock or tap.

See this same fault about two weeks ago, number 4 piston was about a mm down then the rest, as Ellsy, bent conrod, run ok hot but cold it had a miss on tick over!

I know its a tapping noise ..Had the car running at it sound as its from the top.... Thanks For your posts people appreicated!

and if is a bent conrod how much do you think it may cost to repair?

Coming from the top is more like valve running gear, but how the water could affect that is not clear, and any water in the intake should have passed through long ago.


I think that I would do a compression check, that would be informative to any real damage
