Just come across this site and hope that some of you may be able to help.
I have a 91 300SL Straight Six Auto .
I have parked it up over the winter so only drive it approx once a month. The last 2 times I have driven it I experiencie the following - The car starts first time, idles as expected and runs smoothly for approx 5 mins until I stop the engine. The first time it happened it just coughed & spluttered when I tried to start it but wouldn't - I am a novice when it comes to mechanics so I opened bonnet & ensured all plug leads were tight which they seemed to be - eventually after trying again another few times it started as normal and drove normally.
I have just experienced the same problem again today only differeence was that today whe the car started it spluttered & coughed but under revving was ok for a few minutes but as soon as tried to put it into drive it would loose power and cough/splutter - after trying to engage drive for awhile the engine died and would not start even though plenty in battery.
A friend came to assist me and took each individual plug lead off inspected and put back onto plugs - Again the car then fired up no problems and drove like a dream. One thing that he did notice was that on the leads some od the plug screw caps did not seem to be on the plugs (not sure if this should be the case as they must have been replaced at some stage so were by different manufacturers. Does anybody think that this could be the issue and if so do they need to be replaced and how much it would cost ?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
