Mercedes 1998 CLK 320 auto (w208) will not start

Hi,

Two days ago my 1998 CLK 320 auto (w208 ) failed to start - healthy crank turn over but no engine fire. I left the car for about 20 minutes and it started first time no problem. I drove the car for the next couple of days, stop start without problem. Today the car will not start, engine only turns over as before. The crankshaft sensor was replaced about 6 months ago thanks to advice from this forum, I've had no problems until now. It has been very cold here (Scotland (-6) although this may well be unrelated. Any help with this would be most appreciated - it's Sunday tomorrow and I'm stranded...... Thanks!

maybe

try pulling air-mass sensor off and clean with contact electrical cleaner (the elements on underside hold dust particuls) which cause all sorts of problems. After much problems with mine - this was the result. No body could tell me - not even a computer plugges into car:idea:;);)

CLK starting problems

Thanks Grunt-auto, Tried cleaning the Air Mass sensor earlier this evening, it hasn't made any difference I'm afraid - would a faulty one of these prevent the car from starting altogether? I have now begun to wonder whether the crank shaft sensor fitted this summer may have gone faulty as it was an after market replacement part... Any other idea's anyone? Cam shaft sensor possibly..??

No caps and rotor on that engine, Wouldnt be the air flow meter, even if it was duff the car would still start. Sounds like a problem with the key or ignition switch. Television will have a solution.

It does sound like it could be the crankshaft position sensor, however it was changed during the summer following the identical fault. I did wonder if it may have gone faulty - it was an after market part as I couldn't get the MB part in a hurray. Are there any other potential ignition failure problems associated with my CLK? Need to get this fixed ASAP, collecting my daughter for Christmas tomorrow!!

112&113 V6s both suffer from CPS faults. Only real "common" problem for non start if the engine spins over but doesn't fire. It's quite easy to get to, you don't need a ramp. It's at the back of the engine, in line with the flywheel, near the top but slightly NS (passenger side). It is an E8 (I think) socket size but can be removed by using a small 1/4 drive socket about 6 or 7mm & a long extension.

Brilliant, I'm familiar with how to do this changeout, only I cannot believe that I've only got 5000 miles over a 6 month period from the replacement part!! Is there ANYTHING else which could be causing this non start problem? cam shaft sensor? ignition coil/ module? Any other views most appreciated. The car has covered 99,000 miles if this helps anyone with additional diagnosis.

The CPS can be measured when good at 1k ohms , when bad open circuit or up to 100k, buy one from Bosch at £49

CLK 320 1998 Starting problems

Thanks to all contributions re. my latest CLK 320 problem.... Non starting problem turned out to be the Crankshaft Position Sensor, as aptly suggested within a few threads. Strange, as I had this changed out following a similar failure earlier this year. At that time I had changed the faulty part out using an after market part which has subsequently failed (Got six months from it for £65!), so may be good advice for all to stick with MB for such a critical part. Part cost @ £80 from MB stealership. Particular thanks to: type49, jibcl500, grunt-auto and FELLOW for all your suggestions. Merry Christmas one and all!

Malcolm, many thanks. Yes 'twas the CPS (Again!) Will give the faulty after market part a test when I get a chance in order to match the fault tolerances you indicate in your message. Merry Christmas, James.
