Mercedes 300d Diff.

Hi, has anyone got an idea where i can source a realistically priced diff for a 91 300d? I fitted a wonderfully quiet one from a 300e as a temp measure but what ive saved on headache pills im spending on extra fuel! I'm getting approx 25 mpg
I think the ratio i need is 2.87:1 the one i am running is something like a 3.07.
I am based in Coventry if anyone can help

Television is spot on as usual, one of the cars was mine, low mileage good quiet g/box and diff only done 69.000, they took it of my hands after I raped it for parts for my 129sl diesol . Hope this helps

Well gentlemen many thanks for the replies. A diff should be on its way to me early next week. I'll miss being a bit quicker off the mark but i wont miss filling up with veggie oil so quick!

Can you give us a feel for the difference in performance with the lower ratio.

For instance at 70mph what is the difference in rpm.

Did it feel significantly sportier ?

David, it is definately sportier especially from standing. There is a great deal more response with the kickdown also. I will note the rpm at 70 tomorrow and post it for you, I do know it is considerably higher than with the correct diff. Watch this space.

It was 3000 rpm at 70mph.
Im not totally sure the speedo is correct, I did change the cog in the speedo when I fitted the diff but the speedo on my sat naf says - 10% ie car 70 sat n 60.

Hi again, the cog was given to me by the guy I got the diff off. Simple enough job, remove binnacle remove speedo head the cog is a resistance fit and just pulls out with long nosed pliers. You just need to be careful when you pull out the cog that you dont move the spindle too much, exercise carewhen relocating that all the digits line up correctly. The cogs are apparently colour coded. The original 300d diff set up has a white one, if I recall correctly the 300e set up was blue or purple.
