Hi malcolm, it is a mercedes 100ah battery, just picked it up, weighs a ton, leaving it on charge overnight, hopefuly it will cure my "alternater/battery warning",

which model e220 is it? w211, w210?

it wll be fine for the 210, but the 211 has a gel plate battery (it has vrla marked on top) and it is only about 75ah.

it is a W210 E220 cdi avanguarde 2001, which is a bit of luck

that reminds me that I still need to go buy a new battery 110amp to replace this 88amp, is there a market for batteries under 1 year old?

why are the gel batteries lower rated then? and does a 211 need less power to crank etc than a 210?

In the 230 that I have a separate starter battery up front, and the gel battery (AGLM) is in the rear

so your car cranks from the battery up front, but the gel battery powers the car? does that mean theres some kind of equivalent to a split charge relay (as used for caravans etc) somewhere in the set up?

Gel cells can release 30% of their rated power for cranking, lead acid can only release 25%, so for any given draw on the cell, the Gell battery can be quite a bit less in its overall rated output

so assuming they were equal on price (gel are probably expensive though) what would be better for my car when the battery gives up the ghost on me?

I dont think you can just swap a lead acid out and put a gel in place, they have a very different charging requirement and may be damaged by your existing setup
