Three of Mercedes-Benz’ most iconic and successful cars are due to arrive at the Donington Grand Prix Collection, the world’s largest collection of Grand Prix racing cars.
The streamline-bodied 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SLR is the same type in which Stirling Moss achieved his most demanding victory: the 1000-mile Italian Mille Miglia endurance race in 1955, and will line up alongside a 1955 Mercedes-Benz W196, as driven to victory by Moss in that year’s British Grand Prix at Aintree, the first Grand Prix win of his career.
Completing the display will be the 1990 Group C World Championship winning Mercedes-Benz C11 which took Jean-Louis Schlesser and Mauro Baldi to the Drivers’ Championship. The car was also driven by Michael Schumacher.
The cars will be on show at the Collection from Tuesday 26th June until Thursday 19th July, and arrive direct from the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where the 300SLR will have been demonstrated by Sir Stirling Moss OBE.
The cars belong to the collection of the Mercedes-Benz Museum, Stuttgart. Michael Bock of the Mercedes-Benz Museum said, “We’re delighted to loan these cars to the Donington Collection. They echo the mighty Mercedes-Benz “Silver Arrows” machines which took part in the 1937 and 1938 Grands Prix at Donington, and complement Donington’s unique place in world motor sport history”.
Donington CEO Simon Gillett added, “This is a unique opportunity for the public to view these fantastic cars at close quarters. We’re grateful to Mercedes-Benz for loaning them to us, and look forward to developing the link between the Donington Grand Prix Collection and the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart”.
