Hello,
I am going to look at this tomorrow, thinking of running it against my 280SL in winter.

...if my wife doesn't kill me first.:)

EDIT...or should I just put the hard top on and enjoy it all year round?

Any thoughts before I go?

Regards,
Nick.

That's been on ebay a few times but I think the starting price was a lot lower than advertised there, may not be significant but it didn't sell. Looks a nice car though if the mileage is genuine, should be able to knock him down below the asking price.

Hello,

I went to see it and have bought it.
1187907-1t.jpg

I handed over the £1000,a lot of car for the money and as previously discussed in another post,I was comfortable with the price.
MOT to July next year and tax to 31/12/09.
Four new tyres.
While I have no documents to prove the mileage,it feels tight, there is no wear at all on the seats or pedal rubbers and the oil pressure is at 3 bar when running and 2 on tickover.
To drive,it feels almost new.
It's the bottom of the range, you wind your own windows,no sunroof, air conditioning etc,1.8 engine,5 manual gears.
It has ABS and an airbag though and aftermarket alarm/immobiliser,giving remote central locking.

There's a tiny bit of surface rust on the front of the front wheel arches, otherwise no visible corrosion and the exhaust is a nice silver colour from end to end.

One thing, both the temperature gauge and rev counter read low and drop off the bottom of the scale when the ignition is switched off.
Fuel, oil pressure and speedometer are fine.
Do I need to move the needles or is there another fix?

Regards,
Nick.

They're great cars. I would suspect the gauge problem is related to a bad voltage regulator in the binnacle... but why would the needles go off-scale?

Try disconnecting the plugs to the binnacle (or disconnecting the battery) and see what the needles do

If they read correctly when driving are the end stop pins missing that lets them go back too far

It looks an absolute belter well done ,these older Mercs are such good bargains second hand if you find a good one. There are plenty of spares about from scrappers and specialist suppliers at reasonable prices and most important of all no complicated electrics which is the Achilles heel of many of the newer models.

that's a really beautiful car and it's in great condition

it reminds me of when i had a 190D, mine was rusty and awful when i got it but i really had fun doing it up

they really are a nice car to drive, you don't need a computer to turn it on or change the brake pads and you can clearly see the bonnet and bonnet star whilts driving that model, as mercs got newer they changed the shape of the bonnet to be more sloping so you almost have to sit up in your seat to see the star

you'll love the car, let's see some photos of the engine !

cheers
niall

I had a look at the under-reading gauges yesterday evening.
It was simply that the needles on the temperature gauge, rev counter and for some reason the hour hand on the clock were in the wrong place.

How could that happen,I wonder? I still think the mileage must be genuine by the way it drives,so probably not the elbow of the clocker:)

I gently moved the gauge needles to "zero" with the ignition off and straightened the clock hands at 6 o'clock, problem solved.

Fitted a period Blaupunkt radio cassette with manual tuning and push buttons to replace the Sony CD with garish flashing lights and a non-functioning radio.

Just the buzzing sound from the alternator to diagnose and cure, will it be a bearing perhaps?
Edit...and the front interior light doesn't work on either front door switch?
It does work on its own switch.
Any suggestions very welcome.

Regards,
Nick.

Very nice car you have there :D:D

Take hold of the door light switch pins and wriggle them and see if the lights come on,,are they turned off in the overhead control panel

What is wrong with the alternator ,,you say it is buzzing

Hello Malcolm,

Thanks,I decided not to expose the 280 SL to this year's salt, after all.

I've examined the alternator, the front bearing is worn out.
I can't figure the front interior light though,I have tried wobbling the front door switches, the light does work on the switch, but not when you open the doors,ie with the switch in the position with the picture of the light without little beams coming out of it.:)

Wish it would stop raining.....

Regards,
Nick.

I can't recommend these people highly enough.
http://www.mercland.co.uk/mercedes.html
Having failed to source a replacement alternator locally and with prices ranging from £115(rebuilt other brand) to £600(new genuine Mercedes) I remembered Mercland from years ago and rang them.
I didn't even need to quote a part number and the correct, used but sound original Bosch/Mercedes alternator arrived Tuesday morning,as promised.
It was £30 and the chap even apologised for the £15 delivery charge,£45 in total.
Marvellous.

Regards,
Nick.

I liked the black one so much that I have bought another...
Blue190outside.jpg

This one has several extras,an alarm, immobiliser and remote central locking.
Blue190inside.jpg

It even has the toolkit in the boot and I have every MOT and full service history.
It's done 108,000 miles.
I must say, however, that despite no history whatsoever, the black one is smoother to drive, has better oil pressure and less rattles.

Delighted with them both and best of all, this one was only £100 more.
Regards,
Nick.

Thanks for the pictures, Lizzy had a 190d 20yrs ago for about 5yrs. never let her down. I have just recently bought another with a 250d engine 1991, 380,000 on the clock for the same reason, left her sl in the garage. I had forgotten how nice they are to drive very happy with it. Must admit only paid £450.00. Hope this helps
