Mercedes-Benz independent specialists in Cornwall?

I just wanted to know if any MBOA members living in Cornwall can recommend a good M-B independent specialist whose hourly rate does require taking out a second mortgage?

I live in Falmouth which is in the far Southwest of Cornwall.

There aren't any, at least none that I can find. Many garages are willing to work on Mercedes though but finding a good independent is proving tricky.

That's VERY interesting!!! I was unaware there was a MB specialist in Truro and that close (<100 yds) to the former location of Cathedral Motors, my present MB dealer, who used to have premises in Moresk Road which is shown on the TMS map.

Cathedral Motors moved to larger premises in Tresillian, a couple miles outside of Truro. I was there today. Their garage/showrooms are in the countryside away from amenities such as convenient transport facilities. If you take your car in for servicing and they don't provide a courtesy car it means a long walk or an expensive taxi ride.

I will definitely look TMS up, probably tomorrow, to ascertain how long this business has been established. I think this building was previously a bowling alley at one time. It must have changed ownership/function fairly recently otherwise I'm sure I would have heard about them. They are very conveniently located close to the centre of Truro shopping centre and barely a half mile from the Truro bypass.

I will confirm my findings on this Forum because it will be extremely useful for other MB owners living in West Cornwall.

Reda - how do you come to know of TMS? Do you live in the area?

Truro Motor Services Ltd - Independent Mercedes Specialists

Hi All

I visited TMS Ltd today and can confirm that this is a young business little more than 2 years old and was setup by Jason Purseglove, a MB-trained mechanic, following the relocation of the main MB dealership, Cathedral Motors, to Tresillian on the outskirts of Truro.

Jason and his partner Tina have a large, single, industrial unit equipped with a modern workshop and 3 bays. There is ample space for expansion.

TMS Ltd cater for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles and there was evidence they may also undertake restoration projects.

I spoke with Tina who confirmed they only use genuine MB parts (at MB prices) but their manhours rate was more modest and realistic. Tina reported that TMS Ltd were probably Cathedral Motors biggest customer.

There is a Council car park immediately adjacent to the unit and another large multi-storey car park less than 2 minutes walk away. The unit and both car parks are easily accessible from the Truro bypass. Truro's main shopping centre is also less than 2 minutes walk away.

still its a good idea for those wishing to trip around to book in with a decent place...you get to vsist parts of the country and get your car sorted with out resorting to rip off land.

The business is also well respected in Land Rover circles and the quality of the work is top line. If you do callin, do me a favour and mention that Jim Darling sent you? You never know, he might be persuaded to fit the E500 motor in my 300TE for a good price!

Two MB specialists in West Cornwall. Any others?

As you probably realised, I live in Falmouth and your tip paid real dividends. I spoke to Tina Purseglove at TMS Ltd and she was unexpectedly knowlegeable about all aspects of MB although I don't she is a mechanic judging by her carefully manicured hands although the black jump suite suggested otherwise. I suspect that she may have worked for MB, either that or her link with MB is through her husband, Jason. Jason was working on a Sprinter and I didn't get to speak to him. Tina informed me that after Cathedral Motors moved to Tresillian they were taken over by a large motoring group run by Peugeot (It looks as though Peugeot are running a MB dealership in Cornwall. How very interesting!!!) Jason didn't like the new management and left the business. He hoped to buy Cathedral Motors' former premises in Moresk Road, Truro, but Volvo beat him to it. Then the premises in Oak Road came onto the market. The rest is history. They had a couple of old Mercedes in their unit which would have been expensive vehicles in their time. Both were in good order and looked like restoration projects to me.

Prince Charles is seldom in West Cornwall so you are very unlikely to meet. MotardMan has found another specialist near Penzance. If I am in that part of Cornwall I'll pay a visit and report back unless another member beats me to it.

Another useful tip. I haven't heard of this specialist either but like TMS Ltd they may be fairly young OR have been around awhile but really only known to the locals. I think we have a duty to identify these businesses for the benefit of other MBOA members. SLinKyjoe seems keen.

They Use MB parts, can do A/C servicing and checking etc,

Main dealer trained technician, I believe he worked for the main dealer until they moved out to Probus, but don't quote me on that.
