Hi

I have a C240 V6 estate on a 03 plate. Having just had an oil change with my service and been charged £93 + vat for Castrol Longtec oil I was wondering a couple of things.

Good as the provided Castrol Longtec MB229.3 might be, can it really be that much better than the recommended, fully synthetic, Selenia 20K that I buy for my Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo, which costs £6.75 net from Fiat? Surly a highly stressed turbo of a sports car (being driven enthusiastically by me) needs as good if not better oil than a big un-stressed V6? (being driven gently by my wife). The fiat specialist site Selenia as being suitable for all cars as it is so advanced. Can that be true? Could I really not use ANY other brand fully synthetic 0W-30 oil

The service book for my MB says "You can use any oil approved by MB for use in MB vehicles." - If that were true then why all the standards above?

If I did provide an alternative oil to use at the next change, would I get into trouble with the warranty (I'm with 'warranty direct' but I'm talking generally) if a claim had to be made?

I think the straight answer to your question Andrew is yes - the lubricants would be good for a longer life than the servicing schedule allows - so I suppose the system "fails safe", and probably by quite a margin, especially on newer (2007 onwards) low mileage cars where ASSYST requires a service every year or 15,500 miles. Those who do sub 10,000 per year in such circumstances are not nearly taxing the endurance of synthetic oils.
