this is the basic formula for servicing ,A versus B, is subtract present mileage from last B service mileage, and if the difference is 22000 or more B service howevever if the differenceis less than 22000 then A service. Service engineers dont work on what the instrument cluster says. they use the above basic formula. eric is a mercedes benz teacher working in China.

It seems to increase slightly each year. Mercedes make the guidlines, however it depends on which country and enviroment your in. In China I recommend 10,000- (lots of polution here) and bad driving habits.

It also works on you driving habbits, short journeys may drop it down to 10k motorway work may take it up.

hi dava, correct as you are, however only BMW computers are programmed this way - ie driving habbits. Some of the new range MBs do allow for driving habbits

Only BMW? I doubt that, surely the on board assyst works out which service is due, depending upon mileage/use (i.e.long or short journeys, cold starts etc.) and the mileage since the last B service. on my c230 i believe the intervals are between 10-20000 miles (or yearly if mileage is less than 10K) depending upon use but can't remember how the A or B services are worked out, personaly i always give a B service as the difference is sod all (a better look over) and i usually do before the warning is activated, on top i give new air cleaner and plugs at about 25k other jobs when i get round to them , anti-freeeze and brake fluid.

Sorry mate I think your wrong, but it may be that on specific models your right. But the new stuff 2004 onwards is set this way. The ecu knows that today you want to drive like a mad man by the way your driving and kicks down harsher, some times jumping down two cogs and you can tell by driving a car what sort of driver the ower is by the way it changes up and down. To clear the memory in the ecu turn on the ign and press the throttle to the floor for 5 secs then it will reset it self. The 55's and that you have to disconnect the bat for an hour for this to happen.

Well, my assist is stubbornly set to 9,500 miles and doesn't care how I drive. I had it changed to service plus, still 9500. I doubt the 2000 E240 cared much either. I did admittedly get 17k on one occasion, but the trigger for the extra mileage was the addition of 2l of Mobil1 and it's reset was normally 13,000.
