Mercedes bonnet star theft

Hi All,

I awoke this morning to find that some kindly little soul has helped themselves to my three pointed bonnet star. I have bought a new star (Europarts £23.00) and proceeded to take it apart in order to manufacture some sort of quick release mechanism in order to remove it each night.
I suppose it has got to be quick and easy otherwise it will get neglected (no lifting the bonnet up each night) I thought of a Rolls Royce style drop in star by means of attaching a piece of studding to the star that can be dropped in and pulled out very quickly indeed.

I would value any other ideas.

All the very best,

Thanks for that advice, but that policy could get a bit expensive (moving house because some random little itinerent whips away with a £20 badge)actually the area where i live is generally very good but in this day and age nowhere is safe. All you need is a little tyke to be cutting through your area and i suppose a merc badge is an open invitation that is just too much to resist for these sort of people. If only all nasty little thieves stayed in the bad areas then the world would be a much better place.

All the best,

Thanks for some good ideas, electrification and dragging around the streets are very good ideas. Although the badge idea sorts out the problem i do prefer the bonnet star. I have been looking at an electromagnetic idea that i have come up with, basically similar to the German removable star in the above post but with a VCR solenoid to electromagnetically hold it in place when the engine is on. Maybe Merc stars are the "in thing" for all these little ...... monkeys to steal, but i hope they make good use of it as they will not get another one that i have paid for!!

Very well engineered Malcolm!
I must say though, i do have a niggle about the chrome on the lower section of the star suffering acid damage. :):) You could maybe name it the "weeble" modification.:):)

All the very best,

The chrome lifting on the MB Star base is because its made of cast monkey metal, the molecules in the base structure of this metal are never still, and their movement will always push the plating off

Ha ha ha, that's so funny!

I do have a vicious black cat called Salem that looks and acts very like that monkey, maybe i should get him to sit on the bonnet at night.

Very neat idea! I wonder if the star still flexes if hit (pedestrian safety)?

Does that mean you could put a sticky up star on the flat badge bonnets then?
