Hi

I told you all about my accident and losing my C250 TD Estate (manual) which I loved - huge boot brill for kids constant uni moves etc whilst being a nice looking car as well

I want to replace it but not being a very well off bod cannot get a new one (if only)

I have seen a 1998 Mercedes C250 TD Esprit Estate manual (private sale) and am tempted (same brilliant white as my lost one)

can anyone tell me anything about these cars and got any advice for things to look for when I go and see it. Also what do you recon is a good price to pay for one of these?

Lots of questions I know ... sorry but dont want to get it wrong!

Thank you

Buying C250TD.

Hi, I agree, great car the C250 TD estate. I had mine for 18 months before the ever growing family forced it into retirement. Only problem I had was the wiper mechenism. Due to the single blade and gearing made out of plastic they do strip the cogs. If on test the wipers are jerky assume the worst that the mechanism is past its best. Good bargining point as replacemrnt cost me £320 and that was at an independent Merc garage!
As to value mine was a 'T' plate in white, auto, with 135k and full Merc history, sold it for £3500 last October. Good luck .

W202 C Class estate is a great car with robust mechanicals.

You have already identified one potential weakpoint, the wiper. The hub needs regular lubrication.

You also need to consider rust on the tailgate of later cars - the paint generally is fragile, look for one which has religiously touched up stone chips.

As for price, age mileage and condition dictate but I would guess £6000 for the very very best which makes it a real bargain in my eyes. 100k is nothing to one of these. Find a good one owner car with loads of receipts - they are out there. Manual is less desirable so if this is what you want you could find a really good value car.

Also the obvious flat colours and no aircon makes them very cheap so if you can live without metallic and don't mind opening the windows when it gets hot you could be in luck...
