Hi all

Recently bought my first Mercedes, which I think is a great car:D . The only problem I have is a whining noise which seems to come from the rear once I am over 20mph or so:( .

To give a bit of detail, I noticed a slight oil leak coming from the rear diff so i booked it in and the garage fitted a new seal and refilled it with oil. However the noise is still there. After reading through numerous posts on this site I am leaning towards the fact that it may be a bearing issue instead.. the reason for this being that when I go round a right hand corner the noise practically disappears.

Does anyone have any ideas. I would have thought that if it was the rear diff the sound would have been constant in a straight line and around corners.

its such a shame as other than that the car is lovely and has only covered 97k from new with full MB history.

I just long for that MB driving experience of whafting along with no noise at all, which is a bit of a childhood memory for me remembering my dads favourite car he ever had, a 1983 230e from new, lovely car.....

Hi Mark, with the diff pinion bearing the whinning should stop if you take your foot off the throtle, it the whine is still there with foot off or on the throtle then the job is easier as it will be a wheel bearing.

Hi Television

Thanks for coming back to me so soon, the whining is still there when I take foot off the power and also in neutral (cruising along) so i think Ill try fitting a new bearing and see what happens. do you think this is something I can do, or shall I let a dealer do it for me?? How much do you think a dealer will charge, labour wise, for the fitting.

I see you've made a fair few posts on the website, you must love the Mercs...

Thanks again

Mark

Dealers are very expensive on labour, if you post up you area them someone can recommend a good independant MB specialist near you.
