Hi Merc owners

Would anyone knows how to change from Automatic gearshift (C,S) to a triptronic / tipfunction gear shifting? It has been a second day I still cannot figure out how to do it. I press to the right D+ and nothing happen to the Left D- still nothing :) quite a puzzle.

Thanks!

If yours is the gear selector I think it is, then you have P R N & D. When in D, it's in automatic, moving the selector to the left puts it in manual/tiptronic mode where a push to the + upshifts or a pull to - downshifts.

Hi Yes, I have P,R,N & D (2009 model automatic). I will try to push it left towards D- if I remember correctly to activate the manual mode and will report back here :)
Thanks

Hi, When I pushed towards D- the gearbox switched to manual mode it all works - thanks for helping!

Tap the stick to the left and the transmission downshifts one mode, push and hold to the left a second or so and it will change down to the lowest possible gear/mode for the speed you're doing. The indicator on the dash shows which mode you're in - i.e. D, D4, D3, D2. The mode shows the highest gear the transmission will change up to, not necessarily the gear you're in. Equally, after changing down, tap the gearstick to the right and it will change up 1 mode, pull to the right and hold a second or so and it will change up to D.

Are we talking the same set up?

Maybe, or maybe not :oops:. When I looked at the OP's "Your Mercedes" I saw C220 2009, I have C220 2008. What I did not see was his is a CLK, mine is an S204 C Class. I may be wrong, if so my apologies.

TBH the tip system of mine is one of my pet annoyances with the car, as with my tip 968 the dashboard display actually shows which gear you are in whether in auto or tip manual mode, rather than just which mode you are in.

Hi Guys,

I wanted to ask if its OK to switch from Automatic "D" drive to a Tiptronic drive while car is moving at low speed let say 10 to15 m.h. Or will I better off to stop the car before switching to the Manual mode?

Thanks!!

I was reading the owners manual (cor blimey guv'nr!) the other day for my 2005 CLK and came across something curious "do not switch between 'C' and 'S' whilst the engine is running".

Does this really that I can't switch between gearbox modes whilst driving ????? That would be most unusual, no?

Bizarre! Done it on every Merc I’ve had without issue....

Likewise, I switch between modes on every drive depending upon what I'm wanting from the car.

Mmm? Maybe that's why pressing it in my car makes SFA difference ....o_O

When you move the selector to the left or the right, you are not entering "manual" mode...all you are doing is moving up or down a gear...and restricting the highest gear you will be in. So...don't shift to the left and then expect to be able to travel at 150 mph in that lower gear.

So, you are travelling in D and shift to the right, say, to enable an overtake without using kickdown...you will still need to nudge to the right to regain the correct gear.

Read the manual.

The Tip system I had in the 911 would give full manual control and stay in the gear I selected (banging off the rev limiter if I left it), the Mercedes still decides regardless of what you're asking for (Mercedes knows best...) so is only useful for selecting a gear ready for an overtake rather than using it for a spirited cross country drive.

My 968 tip is cleverer than your 911 tip! In manual mode, if you hit the rev limiter without touching the gearstick, it will automatically change up for you. Equally, if you brake in a high gear and the revs drop to about 1000rpm without touching the stick, it will change down, so you will not end up stationary waiting to pull onto a roundabout in a high gear - as happened to me when I test drove a BMW M3 Steptronic!

I believe it also has about 5 modes in full automatic, depending on how you are driving, so you can actually track the car in full auto - but I've never tried it as I invariably drive the 968 in manual mode.

Apologies for the slight thread hack - but the MB "tiptronic" is my pet and probably only major dislike of both my previous S203 and current S204. About the only time I use the facility is at the top of a long downhill, there's one on a route we use to Aylesbury, but that's about it!

But that's not manual, I liked the 911 in that manual meant manual, I don't want someone from Stuttgart telling me what gear I should be in!
I'm there I've selected it for a reason and having it change up when I don't want it to really grinds my gears (see what I did there...).
I know the tip is faster at going through the box than I can be which is why the 0-60 is better than the manual but on track days (and advanced driving) it's nice to have full control.
