Was driving home this evening and i came to a junction and to my horror the clutch pedal stayed down when i let my foot up. I then pulled clutch up with my foot and managed to get it in 1st and get home, any ideas what this is? Manual clk 230k with 77k on the clock.

How long is a piece of string. Its one of those thing that you never know,,if it does happen again, pull the pedal up by hand and give a few hard pushes on it, and that should get you out of trouble,, it could be either end, what happens is the seal washer deforms and on the clutch pedal, so when you push it, it does not push the fluid down to the slave cylinder, it just passes by the fluid. the same could be happening on the slave cylinder

Hi,
I had a similar fault with my C230K (as near as damn it the same as your CLK) regarding the clutch pedal and mine turned out to be a broken return spring on the pedal box assembly, I was able to eliminate the clutch master and slave cylinder as they both had been replaced when the clutch went at 25,000 miles.

But if the return spring was broken wouldn't the pedal be inoperable full stop and not intermitent?

The clutch pedal has huge springs built into the clutch operating mechanism, as long as there is no air in the system, and the seals are good, the fluid in the system will keep the clutch pedal up

I know at my age I am clutching at things, but no thanks:D

This is a job that any garage could do, these things have not changed in the last 60 years.

One thing to check that I have just found is a mod to the fluid tank lid where there is no vent, this can allow the pedal to sink to the floor on the odd occasion. fit modified lid

Quick update, had to use the wifes car again today, 2000 facelift clk 230k. As i parked up on the drive i tried to put in reverse (manual) and the clutch pedal sank to floor again. I tried pumping but nothing, i pushed the car back 5 yards and there was a pool of fluid where i was parked?

Good,, now look carefully at both the clutch cylinder behind the pedal and the one on the bell housing,, I will bet it is the one on the bell housing,, this means that you only need to replace the one that is leaking

You now have no clutch, so not easy to get into gear. only by starting in gear when there is no traffic around, and the car will move off, but if you have to stop you must turn off the engine as you will not get it into gear with it running.

If you are not confident do not try it

When this happened the other day it went ok again, no chance of getting the clutch back temporarily
