Hi guys,

I am the very unhappy owner of an E240 on an S plate, thats just done over 100k.

For many months, ive had to pull over on the motorway and stop the engine, restart it, and set off again as it keeps misfiring and seriously losing power. A few months later, a big bang, and when i put it in reverse/drive it only goes forward.

After being parked up for a few more months, i have come to start it and it idles at less than 700 revs, coughs, misfires, splutters, then cuts out. It will NOT go over 1000 revs. There is no engine managment light present, all i get are BAS error messages every now and then.

Have had people telling me that its the speed sensors on the gearbox ect but im totally stumped :( DO not want to take it into Mercedes after they charged me an absolute bomb to change 12 spark plugs :(

Hi,
. By the sound of it, you have several issues, some possibly more serious than others. Attempting to run it (if it still goes) will probably only cause more problems - cat, oxy sensor etc. I'd get it to a local specialist (dealers would be expensive and useless on yours anyway ) and get it assessed - £75-100 for a full computer diagnostic. They would also be able to swap parts in and test them, rather than just fit and hope as the dealer will. Sounds like you'll need sensors somewhere but we'd all be guessing as to which. My E240 suddenly lost all power last week. oxy and mass air sensors later (£500 - ouch) and all is well again. And thats a W with 41k on it, and no warning lights came on at all, it just slowed down to a crawl. Some parts are more than others so it may not be as bad as you imagine. My BAS/ABS warning came up - took it in with some trepidation - a £10 brake light switch later and all was well.
good luck,
julian

probably not - but you never know.
Remember, its so computerised that a simple dicky sensor can cause the oddest behaviour. Big bang sounds dodgy though. Shouldn't be that bad at S and 100k - thats only middle aged for an E - sounds like it's had a hard life.
