Hi ya recently got a rear silencer for my 300td estate from ajay autoparts in st leonards( 01424 720022) for £132 inc vat . but if you've got a saloon maybe different price as I believe they are different ,It was made by Walker .I'm sure they could get you the full monty. After much ringing around they were the cheapest. If no luck try eurocarparts.com .

Thanks Sacha

I've just rung them - and they told me that they only list a 95-97 W210 part! I told him it was a Walker part, and they said that they would check tomorrow as it musy have been a special order... Hopefully, this will be ok, as the price you paid seems pretty reasonable.

Fingers crossed...

How much of the exhaust? Rear part? Front part? Pipe between manifold and cat? Manifold?

Its not cheap. In fact many people have found that the cheaper parts, particularly the parts with cats, don't last anywhere near as long as the Mercedes bits.

Also, if you are getting the front part, make sure you quote your VIN number when ordering. Theres a twist around the steering column, get the wrong exhaust and you risk heating up the steering column where it shouldn't. If you're replacing the cat, make sure you idle the engine for a good 20 minutes before you drive off with the new cat fixed.

Personally mate I'd just find a local indie and get him/her to order a Mercedes exhaust. They're very good quality.

Thanks Parrot of Doom.

I've just found a Merc breaker in East London that had a complete exhaust ready to go. I popped over with the car to ensure that the exhaust was the same, and got her up on the ramps etc etc - the good news was that the parts were an exact part number match with what was already on the car, so I have confidence that they are correct.

Complete exhaust - down and rear section - including fitting for £300! That will do nicely. The MB parts from MB were in excess of £750.....

Would you believe - that the garage that had done the ball joints and link arms had checked the exhaust, and told me that it would need replacing - they reckoned that it would survive until they came back from their holidays..... When I got her up on the ramp at the breakers - the rear pipe was completely SPLIT from where it enters the rear silencer, and it was merely RESTING on the support brace at the joint. Any adverse bump would have had her off and taking a chunk of my rear bumper with her - I can't believe the garage let me go out like that - tossers.

Anyway - there are a few more things to do - most notably, new glowplugs, new engine mounts and a new condenser as the heater only billows out HOT air even when it's off. This is really crap in this hot weather.....

I've sourced the engine mounts from the USA for £86 for the pair including shipping - the glowplgus for £35 for all six from Ebay. Should be able to keep the costs low and keeping her running.

How long would expect a competent mechanic would take to change the engine mounts and glowplugs? I'll be getting them done at the same time....

Thanks to all.

Regarding the heating - check the duovalve in your engine bay.

Glowplugs will take a couple of hours, could take longer depending on how easy/hard they are to remove. If one or more breaks, don't expect to be picking it up the same day :) Make sure they do all 6 at once.
