If you pick me up in your plane I'll help buddy

regrettably. sold a few yr ago ,to help pay for the place in france ,was grand for 11 yr tho .it reminds me, tech on her pretty basic ,kept that way by huge certification costs to do much about it. maybe a solution to all the aggro we have with modern cars there?

It feels slightly crisper , but it felt pretty good anyway at 95k . This is the 3rd ATF change .

all oil changes are the best and simplest maintenance that one can do ,or it always used to be, sans pump removals ,fidlin with undertrays and buyin pumps because some git bean counter dumped the sump plug !!!

 wow thats a lot of work for an oil change

back in the day when I had mini's all you had to do was crack open the sump plug - let the oil out - replace sump plug - change filter and fill - 20 mins start to finish :D

Darran
I am also of that generation.

. i used to do a lot of ford gearbox,s when younger,a lot younger.! i could have one out AND in in 45 min.
When I used to do Motorsport we could get the (usually red hot) gearbox out and a replacement back in inside 20 minutes on a rear wheel drive Toyota Starlet.
Watched the VW guys do a golf MK2 gearbox in the same length of time (and that's FWD!).

If I'm keeping mine I do want to be able to do the servicing, but at the moment I'm happy to pay someone else. On previous cars I've done what I could, but never owned at auto before. I don't even know where the fuel filter is!!
Smack bang in the middle of the engine under the NVH cover for yours chap!

Three of us did MK 2 Escort 18 minute service, gearbox change and no time penalties at the out time control.
Same for Pentti Airikkala's Astra GTE 14 minutes (timed). Same event watched about 10 Peugeot works mechanics battle to change a gearbox on a 205 Turbo 16 eventually got the car out but the box seized after a few hundred yards, no oil!
Ah, those were the days. Glad I'm in the house now none the less, memories can become very selective with time.

That's a very nice looking W211 you've got there, do you mind me asking how many miles were on the fluid and what sort of condition it was in?

Also, sorry to be cheeky, but you have the same drive train as me, what mpg do you get at 70 with the cruise set please? Thanks!

Yep , the old girl is in very good condition . The ATF change was the third on that mileage of 95k . The last change was a full flush at 65k . The oil looked OK , it was a lot darker than the new stuff , but there was still an underlying redness .
The sump did have greyish fine sludge in the pan and on the filter casing , but no metal particles on the sump magnets . Car gears shift very crisply.
I normally drive with cruise on at 77mph , and regularly drive to North Wales and back , the trip shows about 45mpg on that sort of motorway run . Spirited driving through the Welsh mountains drops that to 39/40mpg .
I always check the cars efficiency on the long 50mph sections of motorway by resetting the trip and mpg would be in the region of 55-60mpg over 10-20 miles at these speeds .
Aside from that , the car is nearly always in S mode . I use cheap supermarket fuel but add a mix of Cetane and 2T oil to each fill up .

I'm still wondering if the fact mine's a sport with the wider rear tyres makes a difference, I think it does? Once I substituted one of the rears for the space saver and saw an immediate 5% or so improvement in consumption.

Yours sounds very healthy, with a smooth changing 722.9 your definitely onto a good one!
