This is their new modular PH/EV concept coming into play.

Developments in battery cell technology are expected to provide the EQE with a range of close to 373 miles (600km).”

Now There’s an interesting statement…

Battery technology is nowhere near the place where it needs to be in order to provide a viable and cost effective alternative to present technologies, I certainly won’t be contributing to the manufacturer’s R&D programmes any time soon.

No, me neither - have to admire those brave (read crazy) souls going electrickery or hybrid right now.

Personally I don’t think either is the way forward and anyone who thinks electrickery is zero emissions is simply wrong

To be fair, at least one manufacturer has been making hybrids for 22 years now. Their reliability is borne out by the number of them used as minicabs...

To be fair you're talking about an electric car that needs a petrol engine to support it's working life, how long do you think it would last without one? How many batteries do you think they would consume in the same lifetime without the aid of a petrol engine? I believe electric cars are the future but battery technology just isn't there yet.

Latest Li ion technologies have the battery cycle life (number charge cycles to 80% charge) exceeding 5000 cycles. Simple maths suggests therefore that battery packs in cars with a range of 300 miles means the pack should last 150k miles.

I'm sure @Craiglxviii can find figures related to battery replacement on electric vehicles.

Any idea how much these batteries would cost to replace. I heard a range of 100k for smaller mainstream before, not much if you're using daily.

Simple calculation is 5000 x range.

I use an i3 occasionally - 3 years old and the range is down to ~55 miles - (from 150 when new) it also has less than 3,000 miles on it... (probably because you can't exactly go very far in it...)

I would say that i3 has non-typical problems. The battery should have an 8 year warranty...

'BMW is one of the few EV manufacturers that offer a clear battery capacity loss warranty, and has guaranteed at least 70% capacity for 8 years or 100,000 miles. The stated usable capacity for the 2014 i3 is 18.8 kWh. Therefore, the battery would need to degrade to 13.15 kWh to trigger a warranty claim.'

Renault lease the battery to the consumer making the battery their problem not the buyers.

Hell yeah. It’s a really nice idea. The driveline & powertrain can be slotted into the newly developed platforms dependent on power requirements; battery can be scaled up or down dependent on grid size needed.

Which goes to prove, there is nothing new under the sun, just a variation on a theme. ;):rolleyes::geek::D

Best part of 40 years ago I developed modular factories, all kit went in/on standard flats/open top containers, ship into country, produce contract needs, pack up and ship to the next site. Making big kit, not namby pamby by motor cars. P'ah :D:cool:
