MERCEDES ESTATE CHOICES

Could anyone offer advice concerning buying a Mercedes estate car?
I want opinions on a high mileage (200K) 300 diesel estate 1990.
Car seems fine but has a noticable whine or whistle which sounds like a belt or maybe( water pump) bearings??? ...
How would this model compare with an E250 D estate ... this is a more modern car 1995 /6 but how it compares quality wise with the above I dont know?. Which model has the better reputation. They are both autos ,same mileage, same price.

i was going to say something along the lines of;

" 2 cars 5 years apart cost the same money, with the same mileage - which do you think has the best reputation ?"

but i'll just leave it with

"the older one will be a w124, which is bulletproof. you'll need to get it looked at though, it doesn't sound quite right."
