Hi All

My C200 Kompressor is now coming to be 3 years old which means the warranty that came with the car will expire. Has anyone purchased the extended warranty from the dealers? Whats it like? Is just like the warranty that came with the car?

I understand that the vehicle will have to under go an inspection before they issue an extended warranty.

It is a bit expensive £600ish pounds for one year

I did extend the one on my c back in the late 90's but that was £750 for 2 years all in. The warranty was the same as the new one and I never came across an issue that wasn't covered.

However, this time round, I didn't buy one. Its £600 per year plus the inspection at another £200+. That's pretty much saying that something serious is definately going to go wrong in the next 12 months. I don't think I have ever had £600 (actually £800) of repairs done in one year - ignoring brake pads and discs etc that aren't covered anyway.

Ignoring the rip-off doubling of the cost, the inspection charge was the nail in the coffin for me. I found it insulting. The dealer has serviced the car recently so there can't be anything too wrong with it. Plus if there was, it would have been fixed under the existing warranty - why would I wait!? A blatantly accountant designed product so I told them where they could stick it. It does smack of the kind of overpriced warranties Dixons sell you! If MB have so little confidence in their products that they estimate an average of £600 of non consumable repairs per car per year, its a pretty sad state of affairs.

I bought an insurance backed warranty from www.warrantydirect.co.uk. instead. My specialist tells me that he's had a number of claims with them and never had a problem. They charged me around £250 for 13 months and haven't asked for any inspections. Sure it doesn't cover as many items, but all the expensive stuff (Engine, ABS,gearbox, ECU, Aircon etc) is covered and I have £350 per year left to spend on non covered items before I am down on the deal!
In the last 2 years since my MB warranty ran out, my total non wear and tear repair bill stands at £300 for a set of plug leads (or are leads wear and tear?), so I recon I'm well up on the deal! I'm also free to have it serviced at an MB specialist rather than the dealer, saving me another £300 this year.

hello - well worth a look are parts&labour warrantys from the AA, especially if you are already a member. It follows your membership. About £52 per year for claims up to £500. I tested it on a Lexus gs300, bought the warranty ( for £26) on the thursday broke down on the Sunday - radiator burst. All fixed with new rad. ( £350+) at main dealer. No probs.
