Mercedes GLA 200 -- 2020 Built -- Intake Rocker Cover Replacement Quotation

My first post ever here, so apologies if not posted under the right thread, sub-thread. Please feel free to move.

I am an owner of a GLA 200 Sport - 2020 - Petrol - M282 Engine. Bought as used from Mercedes Bristol in 2023.
Currently has about 33k miles and is about 5 years old. Annual mileage of about 6k miles, mostly for commuting and rarely for longer road trips.

During a recent service at a main Mercedes dealership, they reported an amber advisory saying “intake rocker cover leaking oil.” (Everything else was Green - no issues).

They showed me a small patch of oil sitting below the intake-side of the rocker cover, which was wet to the touch. The oil level is fine and there are no drips on the ground or burning smell, nor did I have any other warnings.

However, the dealer quoted me £1,600 and said it’s a 7-hour job to fix. They also mentioned they might need to run diagnostics first because they’re not 100% sure where the oil is coming from (so +£200 at least).

I assume people had this issue before, so I am looking for some help to understand:

• Is this a common problem?
• Is it usually just the rocker-cover gasket that needs replacing, or can it involve the timing cover or PCV system?
• What sort of labour time and cost did you pay if you had it fixed? I have asked ChatGPT and said this is a 2-3 hours job, with cost of about £700-900 (which I would be happy to pay), but not sure where the £1,600 is coming from?

I’d really appreciate any advice or experience before I decide whether to repair it now or just monitor it. And whether to find an alternative service provider or go with Mercedes.

I would clean it off and monitor, it could be coming from the cam actuator or another place especially at that price. Mb are known for scouting for work.
Ps no need to blanc out part numbers.

Is any MB quoted price sensible.

no the price is a ****** rip off.

Cars weep in certain places. Clean the area and see if its a gushing leak and monitor to see if its just a misting.

I have had no end of mb quotes over the years which are ludicrous or just plain bull.

Surely it’s not an engine out job 7 hours labour seems excessive might be a good idea to find out what is involved to necessitate that amount of time. I’ve yet to meet a computer that can figure out where an oil leak is coming from sometimes their insistence on using Xentry borders on the ludicrous

I doubt xentry will point out an oil leak, thats a mk 1 eyeball job if not doing r cover urself, find an experienced indie to do it.
Recently i asked an mb dealer for info on a fault code, i was buying pts at the time. I gave him the code, he said they wud have to book it in for diagnostics as the rubbish ibwas using was not giving a benz code!!!
Code was given by xentry and was same code as icarsoft!! Wxxkers!

years ago I had to replace the cover for the first aid box on the w220. It sits at the bottom of the seat.
I got the part from Mb it was 14 pounds if i recall.
i got the part and a quote (courtesy) for them to fit. Its a big job and the seat has to come out. the quote was over 500 pounds.
i got home and it took me less than 5 mins.

thats just an example.

They aren't the nicest to do and we have done lots of work on this engine already from head gaskets and oil leaks.

As you can see, the rocker cover is buried in other items relating to the injection and camtronic system, which has to be removed. There is no gasket on the rocker, but a bonding sealer, which needs to be cleaned away and resealed properly.

Like Star has said, do check the camtronics for leaking, but its likely not them. Ive never had one leak before.

If I can help, I am fairly local to you in Clevedon. Pop it down for a second opinion if you wish.
