Mercedes GlE350de Battery Level charge setting

Hi all... I have a Mercedes GLE350de, I tend to only run my vehicle on short journeys so normally once the battery is fully charged I don't normally need to generate power to recharge the battery. However, I have noticed that when I do run the vehicle in diesel mode that very few miles are generated back into the battery, I recently travelled from Manchester to Wales and back, and only 4 or 5 miles (if that) were put back into the battery. Is there a mode that I should have my vehicle in (on long journeys), which will allow for the recharging the battery whilst driving or is there a way of putting charge into the battery myself whilst driving?
