Why is it that most merc owners think they are superior to other drivers on the road.
I have found this since i bought my car a year ago.
Its not a nice image to put forward, after all it is only a car,a form of transport.just because it looks good and drives great and makes you feel good.

Maybe i have answered my own question,

There is the alternative, I drive so slow that people can see my nice car, it works giving a nice polite image:cool:

What makes you say that Merc drivers feel superior?

Personally, I've never been able to associate any particular driving/attitude behaviour with any particular brand (apart from LR Discovery drivers, they hate scooter drivers!).

Rather sweeping generalisations! Not all MB owners have such blinkered prejudices - I have both an MB and BMW and appreciate the finer points of both.

To view the inverted snobbery attitude of...

said drivers, you need only drive my Fiat Seicento! Most drivers treat you like scum, Mercedes owners included!

I just like looking at the bonnet star emblem as I drive. It is the one thing that would stop me getting another make of car now.

Ricco

Everyone hates scooters!!!!!!!, if they cant do more than 30 mph then they should be banned. But knowing you Ricco I should imagine you have or have had the best Italian designed scooter available!!!

I though that acalade went to BMW drivers,

Mainly the lowly 316i's always with the front fogs on pretending they are driving M3's.

I've owned both BMW's and Merc and combinations of both, Have to say with the models Its been ok. Only with the BMW convertible I could wait for ages trying to pull out of a junction....or at least until another BMW driver let me out )

Maybe consider your own driving style and like Malcolm says its nicer to just cruise and watch all the muppets.

cheers

Ah, but I am a Merc driver and am actually superior. So that's OK then :D :D :D

It's not so much the car's image as such but certain makes do attract certain personality types. So, as a general rule, merc owners do see themselves a bit above, say a mondeo driver. After all, they could have had a mondeo and cose not to and spend more instead. Chances are that the mondeo driver didn't have the option of a merc.
Yes - ok a merc is a 'superior' car, in the same way a jag is. I think they tend to attract people who want to feel that bit special and above the rest. Sorry , but the whole 'its just a car' thing is rubbish. If that's the case, then why pay the premium? After all, a Toyota Avensis or a VW Passat are very close in terms of build quality and a hell of a lot cheaper!
If you say you don't see the image at all, and bought the car anyway - can I sell you a Daewoo 14" TV great value at only £750!
Why choose a C over, say a 3 series when the 3 series is allegedly better to drive and cheaper into the bargain? We are swayed by things like image whether we choose to admit it or not.
Categories do tend to apply in my experience. Mercs tend as a general rule, attract engineering minded folk who like a bit of heritage and have climbed their way towards the top. People who have achived above average and don't want to hide it but at the same time, don't want to stuff it down other people's throats either. The kind of "you know it and I know it so we'll say no more on the subject". They must have climbed to some extent as you can't afford one on a 'junior' or assistant's salary and if you don't feel a little bit better than the rest of the pack, you wouldn't be as succesful. To some extent, success is a self fulfilling prophecy after all. (how many weak self doubters do you know up the greasy pole?) It may not be a politically correct or very paletable, it doesn't make it any less true.
BMW still has that 'thrusting', agressive, red braced, look at me, image and it takes a lot to look past that. Hence, those to whom that image appeals (the David Lloyd crowd!) jump at them. The rest of us tend to back away and naturally drift in the direction of the 3 pointed star or the jag instead.

Ferrari is my favourite one. I'm sure exceptions exist but all the (5 admittedly) ferrari owners I have met, without exception, are complete and total self obsessed w......s! Lovely car, shame about the owner! But I guess in most cases, the personality type you need to advance far enough to afford one, requires you to be happy to ride roughshod over others so it should be no surprise.

Well haven't cars have been aspirational status symbols for as long as there have been cars?

Curiously enough, I've had much kinder looks from people when posing around in my 300CE with all the windows down (I still **adore** that as much as on the first day I had it!) since I ditched the 'rude-boy' alloy wheels in favour of the original 15-hole flatties. I also tend to have Hank Williams III on the ICE rather than Drum'n'Bass, which confuses people.

The best vehicles I've had for exchanging broad smiles with most road users and even bigger ones with fellow owners were the Citroen 2CV and the MZ ETZ250- I love my Mercs but I do miss that!

Perhaps there's a distinction to be made between those who buy new/ nearly new Mercs (as exemplified in JBerks post above) and those of us who drive older/ classic Mercs.
I bought my W123 because a) I love the look of the coupe & the inate reliabilty and quality plus b) I knew I could work on it to certain extent myself.

All this talk of being superior and climbing the greasy pole makes me feel slightly sick. My car wouldn't be the way I'd gauge my success in life. Each to their own eh? ;)

The Salesman at the MB dealer where i have just bought my first merc (picking it up friday and really excited!!!) welcomed me into the "world of Mercedes!" and that did make me feel a bit special, he also mentioned the fact that MB owners tend towards the finer things in life, as I'm not used to that lifestyle, I hope the car brings me good fortune, but however it's the driver that makes the car, not the car that makes the driver. Well a bit of both is probably more honest :D

I'd agree with nick45, and definitely associate with the latter- the day I have to buy a newish car that is less likely to go wrong for mission-critical everyday driving (not that either of my battered Mercs have ever really let me down) will be a sad one. It's down to whether we let ourselves be defined by our material possessions.

On a lighter note, I recently had the opportunity to allow a pretty girl to be impressed by the tactical offer of a lift home in the CE...:D

As Nick 45 There is much joy to be had from the classics, I would love one again but I cant keep 3 cars at my time in life.

Being able to do things is an important part of the package, a B service at £400 is out of the question for a young family man on a modest income. Thank goodness these wonderful cars have lasted so well and within reach of many.

Long may this be the case

I go to David Lloyd, I drive a Mercedes -and I don't think I am 'thrusting'...

Well said, Nick

I did say it was unpaletable! Sadly not likeing something (I don't either) doesn't make it any less true.

However, if you're honest with yourself, I'd say you still choose your car to project an image. Everyone does - its a fact of life. If I had to analyze it (as a total amateur who doesn't know you admittedly!)
You don't want to appear wealthy but at the same time, wouldn't be happy with a ford focus because that would make you look like everyone else. You want to stand apart so subconsiously or otheriwse, make a list of cars that are available to you that could do this and you get a 123. Otherwise, for the same money you'd get a focus, better fuel economy and less maintenance required. It would still get you from A to B perfectly well.

If I'm honest, then yes, I say I drive the car I do for room for the kids, good economy, safety and performance for long distance commutes as well as excellent build quality and good resale value. I also love the look of the thing. and it's all perfectly true, but that could have been achieved for a lot less money so there must be a part of me that wants to show the world that I'm succesful and so should be taken seriously. Maybe something I try to deny or hide from, but it's there all the same.

Whether the car defines the success or the success defines the car is an argument for psycology and philosophy!

Does not that joyful moment say it all when one says well I could by that Capri or Escort but for that little bit more I can have a Mercedes Benz.
