Looking for some informed opinions on a quote from Mercedes please.

My wife started having some braking trouble with her 2019 e220d a few days ago - felt as though the ABS was kicking in when stopping even at slow speeds, and braking seemed to be generally poor, the car would travel a bit even with the brake pedal fully depressed.

Mercedes have today told me that the root cause a buckled wheel, and to fix it they'll need to replace all 4 alloys, discs and pads and hubs all round, at a cost of over £6,000.

Could one buckled wheel cause all of this? I'm no mechanic, but it feels like a bit of stretch to me.

Hello and welcome,

I’d go to one of our Mercedes indies and get a second opinion.

I’ll take a stab and say you’ve 19” or 20” wheels on the E220d…

You could just replace the one buckled wheel and see where you go from there. I’ve just bought a full set of Brembo disks and pads for my SLK - £232

Hi and welcome.
As above. I'd be very wary of a lot of what main dealers say and l very much doubt you need 4 wheels etc.

Agreed, at 12,000 miles I was told I needed new rear discs and pads by Mercedes dealer. Told them not to bother, at 28,000 miles I eventually changed the pads and now at 40,000 miles still on the original discs.

The OM654 220d engine uses a tandem oil/vacuum pump in the sump that’s known to be troublesome and quite a few have been replaced due to a vacuum leak which affects braking pressure, I’d have this checked first by an MB Independent. If this isn’t the problem I’d start by replacing the buckled wheel and having the brake discs and pads checked for wear and runout (warping).

If the problem does relate to a vacuum leak with the tandem pump it’s an engine out job and very expensive to replace ££££s

Sounds like you are being taken for a fool by that main dealer!
Why would you need to change the alloys, discs and pads and hubs on three other corners because of a buckled wheel? Outrageous.

What is your location? Hopefully one of the members can recommend a good independent Mercedes specialist for a second opinion.

My thoughts entirely!

I’m sure that £6k would cover the cost of everything quoted for and the replacement of the oil/vacuum pump in the sump

You've all confirmed what I suspected. I've found a well reviewed independent Mercedes specialist not too far away, I think I'll tell Mercedes to shove it.

Thanks all!

Pure money making design. With no other real justification

Welcome. Have a look at this thread which suggests Mercedes may sort out a tandem pump issue as a goodwill item.

The affected cars are old enough now to end up on trader forecourts - so buyer beware, the trade must be aware of this problem

Update: Spoken to Mercedes today apparently they had only booked it in for a brake vibration problem. Having explained the full symptoms of the issue (again) they've taken another look and decided it is in fact the dreaded tandem pump issue. On the plus side they're going to fix it for free.

Fingers crossed there's no more issues then I can get the car back and never visit a main dealer again!

That partly because things get lost in translation between the bimbo on the service desk & the organ grinder.

True, I asked on the phone if they could update the software and add Android Auto to my car, the girl on the service desk phoned me back and said the parts dept did not know what Android Auto was, so no!
