Was in the news few months back. VAG are developing their own coolant co2 based IIRC and MB want to do the same, but until they do they will need to switch to the new honeywell one.

I take the view that Mercedes won't be taking the stance they are unless they believe they have a sound position. Mercedes engineers are not stupid folk.

I do find France's position interesting though.....is this another attempt at supporting the home grown brands.

^^ This is the stuff beaurocrats and lawyers dream about about...

The link says
The issue is that R134a is 150 times more potent than carbon dioxide when it comes to global warming. Daimler counters this argument by suggesting its replacement, Honeywell’s R1234yf, can emit toxic hydrogen fluoride gas when it burns

R134 decomposes above ~250C producing, amongst other nasties, hydrogen fluoride! http://www.refrigerants.com/msds/r134a.pdf

AFAIK the only reason R12 was banned was environmental reasons (ozone layer) and nobody was bothered about the fact it produces phosgene (WW1 chemical weapon) as it decomposes

Isn't the new 'safe and environmentally friendly stuff ultra expensive compared to r134a?
