Hi,

Can anyone help with a problem I have on my R129.

There is a noise like a stone trapped between the disc and the back plate
which has an even rythm with the turn of the rear wheel up to about 30 mph and then goes. The noise is not there all the time, in fact it has been two weeks since I heard it before today. It is most likely to appear after I have stopped and the accelerate away. It sounds like something is catching on the caliper but all seems to OK as are the wheel bearings and UJ couplings.
Could it be something to do with the "in-board" braking system (parking brake) or some more sinister and expensive repair?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thak you.

Could well be the springs rusted on the parking brake shoes and fallen against the internal drum and getting thrown about.

As Kieth,,work out what side the noise is coming from and investigate the bearing, brakes etc. With the rear wheel jacked and in N and the brake not applied, rotating the wheel should reveal something

Another thing. The pad material on the inboard shoes can become dislodged and cause these noises you describe.

It needs some investigating really

R129 - 300-24 Noise from rear wheel.

Very many thanks for info.

I will investigate rear inboard shoes. Do I have to take caliper off before I extract the hub containing the shoes? I have no experience of this type of "handbrake" system.

Thank you.

Yes the caliper must be unbolted, and the parking brake backed off with the adjuster in the rear drum, in order to clear the ridge that will have formed in the drum, but do be sure that this is where the noise is coming from

R129 SL 300-24 - Noise from offside rear wheel.

Many thanks for info.

The noise, a metallic clacking, can only be coming from the drum as all other moving components on the wheel, discs, caliper, bearings etc: seem to be OK.

I feel a note of caution in your post, is the removal of the drum something you feel should not be attempted by a D I Y person?

Look forward to your reply and thanks again.

ROY loosen the wheel nuts jack up and remove the wheel --Apply the handbrake gently -so the disc still moves --see if this stops or alters the sound ?
Its best to get a set of Handbrake shoes before going any further or removing anything -they are not expensive.
Removing the disc requires first unbolting and taking off the calliper-easy enough but replacing and adjusting the shoes and cable must follow - if you get a competant mechanic (local service station) to give you a price it should not be too expensive --!

Everyone is assuming that the parking brake is to blame, the easy check is to drive along and gently apply the parking brake, and listen to see if the noise is better or worse.

There are so many other things that can make a noise

R129 (300-24) Noise at rear off side wheel.

Thanks to all for your help.

I have arranged for car to be looked at by local garage who said it sounds like a broken spring, or material from shoe, getting caught at low speed in the drum. This agrees with your views. I will post again next week to let you know what it was (hopefully!).

Thank you again.

Just drove my 1988 650CL hardtop convertible back from LA to Denver. 60K mi. Has a once per rev rt rear wheel squeak usually while turning, sometimes straight on, and more probable when making a tight medium speed turn (don't remember left or rt). Will pull the wheel this evening. These tips are helpful!
