mercedes sprinter 313 cdi gear change

Gear change on above 2003 model is very stiff,any suggestions as to what can be done to alleviate problem?

Thanks again for your advice-this job sounds far too complicated for me but I will print details and give them to my mechanic when I take van for next service.
