It may be of interest, my catalytic converter on my 230e w124 has blown, it has a big hole in it.. the MB price was £953 excl fitting!!!  bit off a rip off there,  i found a non genuine one from www.cats-direct.com for £300, which i will fit myself.  the cars only worth £4k it's not worth spending mb prices (not that i can afford it anyway).  I hope it fits OK..

If its a 1992 model you do not actually need a CAT by law. You can just get the system without a CAT .....much much cheaper way to go. Your car will still get through its MOT because the emmission levels for cars of that age are not so strict.

Make sure you retain the MB downpipes though as some of the aftermarket ones tend to be rather loud inside the cabin - they sort of make a booming resonanating kind of noise so be warned.

Spike If your car was Made in or after september 1992 and fitted with a cat from new you DO legaly have to have a cat..... but many MOT testers don't know that..Plus as nickh said the HC and CO limits for cars ~10years old are quite high, it may well have passed with out a cat..

Unfortunatley my car is a 1993 model (All cars must have a cat after 1992) so I've got to replace mine....I'm going to look into that web site you posted ..hopfully they'll be cheap for mine as well.

I don't know about you but when I replace mine I'm going to fabricate a guard for mine to stop it being dented .

received my new catalyst today, the converter looks smaller than the MB one, not build to the same quality (guess thats to be expected) though, !!

from what I gather this may fix my uneven idle I have at the moment..

as my car is april 1992 then I don,t  have to have a cat then?

If so (less expenseive which is great) then won't I need to replace the cat with another silencer? or just go straight through??

let me know then I'll send my new cat back..

I asked a knowledgable chap I know at Mercedes, and it would appear that I am better off with a CAT, abeit a cheaper one, as running without one would probably cause some starting and running problems, even though the car would run.

Just agreed to pay local MB dealer in Osterode about 1300 Euros inclusive VAT and fitting for the latest cat to my 230E. This cost includes new exhaust system! The new type of cat is half the price of the original MB version.
Fitting this CAT will reduce emission tax cost considerably. (Car registered in Germany). More info on type etc later.

Why do people complain so much about dealership prices? You have to consider how much your car was new. Its a merecedes if you put a genuine cat on it would last another 10+years, where as the pattern one will probably be dead in three to five years. Depends how long you plan to keep the car if its short term the pattern one is understandable but for longterm ownership the merc one is the obvious choice. I'd rather fit a geniune one and change it once in 10yrs than fit a mickey mouse one and change it two maybe three times in ten years.

My cats went on my 02 E280 and i gave MB £2,500.00 for the pleasure. i did get £1650 back for MB, after a few letters and phone calls though. I agree fit the MB parts and get the warrenty.

My '91 300CE24 is still on its first cat. I would think it fair that on a 02 car that MB pays the WHOLE bill! I would like to know what the warranty is you are talking about seeing as your cat only lasted barely 4 years.

this sounds like dealer nonsense, to me. without a cat your car will obviously have more power. the only (sensible) reason your source might claim for using a cat where none is strictly required would be the O2 signal from downpipe to ECU ... and since this sensor comes *before* the cat, there is nothing preventing you decatting the car (aside from the small plumbing matter of O2 sensor into replacement pipe). when i had a w124 with no requirement for a cat i just took the pipe into the local exhaust fitter and got them to cut the offending item away, replacing it with a straight piece.

incidentally, i'm interested to see that you value your w124 230e at about £4k ... is it gold plated, anywhere?

... because the list price of my 1998-model T210 E300 turbodiesel estate was £38,000, and the windscreen wiper mechanism I had to replace in 2006 cost approx. £550 in parts alone. Ignoring inflation, the windscreen wiper mech. cost 1.4% of the original list price of the car - or one sixty-ninth if you prefer!

I don't have access to a bill-of-materials for the T210, nor to a current parts price-list. I think it would be interesting to see how much it would cost to buy all of the parts from MBUK to build a car!
(If anyone does have access to either, thanks but I don't have the time)

Shortly I will be needing a full exhaust for the T210 and although I intend to buy genuine MB I may have to compromise. I wonder if an alternative is to buy one from MB in a "near" other country, perhaps Ireland (because of right-hand drive) or Holland/Belgium. Anyone have experience?

I previously owned a BMW 5-series: BMW significantly discounted the common consumable parts (I think exhausts, brakes, batteries) prices for cars over a certain age.
