Hi, has anyone seen / experienced any paint issues with Designo white? I have lots of blisters that have appeared across my bonnet, nearside wing and other areas of the car. The car is only 18 months old. Mercedes are telling me its not a manufactures warranty issue, so getting pretty stressed out with this.

I’m not sure how MB are saying that unless the car has been resprayed by someone ? There is a 30year paint warranty .

They have said the paint is thicker than what comes out of the manufacture and was showing at 200-220 micrometres. The car has had no paintwork done by me or the dealer I purchased it from (6 months old). There is no evidence of any paintwork being done anywhere. I have no idea how they can just say that its not covered. I am going to try and contact mercedes benz uk, but can already sense a run a round.

get the paint thickness measured at a decent body shop and ask them if its previously been repaired

200+ is quite thick for a factory finish , IIRC my CLS was roundabout 130 and the Porsche is 110 both from the factory.

It is possible that the car has had a repair in the first six months of ownership.

In what other areas are the blisters. Could be the car was prev on finance and the PO had it cleaned up prior to handover.

They said should be around 120, but there was another car on their forecourt that showed 167, so doesn't seem an exact figure. The dealer put a supaguard paint protection on, but whatever the case, I am left with a car that has paint problem and being told its not down them

The blisters are starting to show on passenger door and some areas that they say wouldn't have been painted at the same time as car, some plastic bits. Car was bought at 6 months old as an ex demonstrator. MB dealer that sold car have said it had no paintwork done or issues.

could also have been done when the car was delivered from factory. not uncommon they get a scratch here and there and they get a respray before going to the dealer.

Or as an ex demo - well someone had it a few days and bobs your uncle.

The paint manager at MB could find no evidence of any paintwork being done, so its unlikely. The high readings were all over the car, which would mean it would've needed a full repaint, which seems highly unlikely and would mean MB dealer I bought off are lying to me.

I have noticed that there was threads online about red mercedes cars having issues with paint, so it prompted me to join this site to see if anyone else knew of issues.

As previously mentioned , it maybe time for an independent paint specialist to compile a report of the entire vehicle then revisit your dealer with the facts, this removes any grey areas re the paint being factory - or not.

When i had the Cayennes paint checked over the first place they looked was the door shuts , the only time they would be re-painted would normally be if the vehicle had been re-shelled.

That deterioration does not appear to be the same as the micro blistering on the Fire Opal Red that you have read about, and I've never seen a post about Designo white failing. To me it resembles damage caused by some sort of chemical fallout. I say this because I use to see this on cars parked near a factory when equipment failure occurred. I wonder whether the car has been contaminated by something and has been redone but not correctly, hence the paint thickness. A very strange one and someone back down the line is not admitting what's happened. No doubt MB will continue to fob you off, but continue to press it.

Op l think it's time to get assertive with the dealer you purchased from, maybe armed with a report from a decent bodyshop as already mentioned. Given half a chance it seems a lot of dealerships will try to fob you off, so stand firm and perhaps record everything in writing copied to the dealer.
Good luck.

Have made notes on our discussions meetings. Apparently got to try and pursue through MB UK, who run all dealerships here, but before I had to go through their call centre, thought I’d ask here. I’m not sure about an external contamination, as although it doesn’t show on the above image, there is blistering, before it becomes paint off.

MBUK licence to the franchises. So you always end up dealing with the Franchise and MB UK step aside mostly unless they are suffering damage.

Get everthing in writing and if not possible take the email of the person you are talking to and send them an email along the lines
of ....as discussed.

The blistering looks due to poor prep on a spray job on some of the pics.

You need a MB report (which it seems you have) which is good as thier own people saying its crap and an independent and take it from there.

Your selling dealer is talking horse doo daa.

....and do not go through the MB UK call centre, IN WRITING.

If you go through a call centre you speak to a who is clueless and records nothing, next time you call, a is not there and you explain all to b again and he has no record of ever speaking to a, next time you call b is off and you speak to c.....get my drift!

Somebody has worked on that car, stick to your guns and if necessary have it out when potential customers are within ear shot.

Thanks, trying to find out the name of someone senior at MBUK to contact. May seek some assistance from citizen advice or rouge traders type setup. The problem is that they’ve sent some report to Germany, who are just saying nothing untoward has happened when made or in transit to the dealer. All just trying I swerve responsibility and leaving me feeling stressed and worried I’ll be left with a very expensive problem to fix
